Electrical Technician

Please note:  Employees in this classification are subject to 24 hours per day emergency call-in and must report to their normal headquarters within 40 minutes.

• Install, test, calibrate, repair and maintain process control equipment including, transmitters, recorders, PID loop controllers, ultrasonic meters and pneumatic and telemetry equipment
• Install, program, debug and modify process control equipment involving the use of PLCs and related communication network equipment, including PC based interface software, radio and hardwired SCADA systems and  variable frequency drive systems
• Research and design the purchase and installation of equipment to correct and/or upgrade existing electrical control systems as well as minor expansions, such as traffic signals and airfield lighting systems
• Verify equipment compatibility for interface to existing equipment; conduct routine maintenance on electrical control equipment, motor control and starter equipment, automatic transfer switches, standby power generators, and medium voltage switch gear
• Develop punch lists for work to be completed or corrected during construction

Knowledge of:  

• Motors, and motor controls
• Instrumentation & process controls, signal transmitters, teleme­try, alarm systems, medium voltage switch gear, drive systems
• Analog and digital electronics
• Commercial industrial wiring practices, electrical codes and PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) based control systems

Ability to:  

• Interact effectively with the public and coworkers
• Diagnose and repair electrical and control problems
• Install, maintain, and repair electrical/electronics equipment
• Program, configure, de-bug and troubleshoot PLC equipment
• Climb ladders and scaffolds and operate bucket truck
• Work safely on energized electric equipment 
• Work in confined spaces

Education, Experience & Special Requirements:  

• Typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent, with post-high school college course work in electricity, electronics
• Relevant training in a trade or vocational school
• Typical experience would include five years of progressively responsible relevant training and experience as an Industrial Journeyman Electrician which included training in PLC and VSD applications
• Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment
• Arcflash Certification is desirable

Examination Process: An online written examination will be administered. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill current and future vacancies. 

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:

• Positive past employment references
• Review of a driver history record
• Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
• Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
