What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Cadet position at City of Redding?
This position is not intended to send individuals to a Law Enforcement Academy as a Police Recruit.
The Police Cadet program is designed to provide law enforcement exposure to those individuals with a serious commitment toward pursuing a career in law enforcement. Individuals in this classification support field operations, records, administrative, and investigative personnel by performing a variety of non hazardous police and clerical work.
- Performs filing.
- Maintains logs and worksheets.
- Answers phone and takes and provides information.
- Transports vehicles.
- Performs traffic control.
- Assists public at front counter.
- Serves subpoenas.
- Signs off on mechanical violations.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Some basic knowledge of police procedures preferred
- Knowledge of filing and recordkeeping.
- Knowledge of motor vehicles, city streets and addresses.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees.
- Ability to answer phone and provide information.
- Ability to read and write
- Ability to find addresses and people and serve subpoenas
- Ability to maintain a valid California Driver's License.
- Typical education would include a high school education, and current enrollment in, or completion of, classes in Administration of Justice.
- Typical experience would include office work, prior experience as a police explorer, or working with the public.
- Minimum of 18 years of age is desired.
- Possess the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
- Familiarity of typing keyboard desirable.

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
- Positive past employment references
- Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check
- Passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening test
- Positions within the Police Department require applicants pass an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.
