What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Specialist position at City of Redding?
- Assist the Risk Manager in planning, implementing, and evaluating elements of the City's safety and loss reduction program.
- Assist in the development of safety-related procedures, training, documents, reports, forms and correspondence.
- Inspect City facilities and work locations to identify unsafe conditions and practices and to insure conformity with provisions of federal, state, and local safety codes.
- Conduct or assist in conducting training programs concerning health and safety issues, such as hearing conservation, hazard communication, respiratory protection, welding safety, confined-space entry operations, hazardous material handling, storage, disposal, spill reporting and cleanup procedures.
- Perform professional, technical, and analytical work, while exercising safety specific functional, regulatory supervision of staff.

Knowledge of:
- Federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to worker safety.
- Methods, techniques and practices used in determining and minimizing the harmful effects of workplace hazards.
- Hazardous material handling, storage, disposal, and spill reporting and cleanup procedures.
- Codes, rules, regulations relating to property, vehicular and liability hazards.
Ability to:
- Identify unsafe working conditions and practices through on-site inspections.
- Interpret and apply laws, standards, regulations, and policies relating to occupational health and safety.
- Implement innovations designed to effectively prevent employee injuries and vehicular accidents.
- Develop, organize and present safety training programs.
Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
- Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
- Typical education would include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or equivalent with major course work in industrial hygiene, environmental health or a field directly related to occupational health and safety.
- Typical experience would include two years of responsibility for developing, implementing, maintaining and evaluating occupational health and safety programs.
- Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
- Work is conduced both indoors and outdoors. The employee works in an environment in which safety, environmental and health concerns may require use of Personal Protective Equipment.
