Position Definition: Under direction, this position performs a variety of complex library clerical and technical duties in the administrative support job category in the Library, assists patrons in making effective use of library materials, and performs other related duties as required.
The ideal candidate will be a highly enthusiastic team player with a commitment to providing excellent service, require minimal supervision to make sound decisions, and have experience interacting with all customers including volunteers, community stake holders, City departments and the public.
This candidate will possess a strong passion for Library services, be able to promote the Library effectively at outreach events and activities and will be able to work evenings and Saturdays.
This is a part-time position not eligible for City benefits. The hiring department will contact candidates in which they are interested. This position is accountable as a team member to perform complex library clerical and technical duties including but not limited to:
- Ordering library materials;
- Maintaining shelf list records and overseeing the updating of catalog records;
- Making routine decisions and assisting in the selection of vendors;
- Verifying bibliographic information required for ordering;
- Verifying invoices for materials received and forwarding for payment;
- Communicating with vendors to adjust errors in shipping and billing;
- Making acquisition recommendations;
- Conducting story sessions, book talks, and special programs and assisting in program development;
- Preparing displays and program fliers or handouts;
- Performing routine or "copy" cataloging of books, pamphlets, video and sound recordings and computer software using OCLC cataloging and editing rules;
- Editing existing bibliographic records, making corrections to the database;
- Assisting in troubleshooting computer hardware, software and operating problems;
- Monitoring supply inventory;
- Compiling statistics;
- Assisting and directing library patrons;
- Training and overseeing the work of volunteers and clerical staff as assigned; performing circulation desk duties;
- Using various office equipment such as a copy machine, computer and telephone, during the performance of assigned duties;
- Performing related duties as required.
This position requires:
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, techniques and methods related to library clerical and technical work such as cataloging, ALA filing rules, OCLC terminal operation, ready reference sources, juvenile materials and services, and other standard library systems.
Ability to:
Work independently with minimal supervision; read, process and interpret written and numerical material rapidly and accurately; make rapid and accurate calculations and comparisons; establish and maintain effective working relationships; apply and interpret policies, procedures and rules; operate various library equipment and systems; meet medical standards for the class as prescribed; safely and effectively perform required duties; and read, speak, write and understand the English language.
Education and Experience:
Associate of arts degree in library technology and one year of library clerical experience, or three years increasingly complex and technical library experience.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process may include but is not limited to: application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview.
