General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate semiskilled work maintaining and repairing buildings, grounds, and parks to include plumbing, electrical, general construction, and general mechanics, operating vehicles and equipment to include mowers, skid steers, tractors, dump trucks, grinders, bobcats, and power tools, removing fallen trees, repairing playground equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Park Assistant Superintendent.

Essential Functions
Monitors and maintains city building, grounds, athletic fields, tracks, and playgrounds; sweeps; collects trash and debris; performs snow removal and spreads salt and sand; hangs decorations; applies fresh coats of paint as needed; mows grass; trims and cuts shrubs and trees; performs general landscaping; fertilizes; seeds and plants foliage; sprays weeds; rakes and disposes leaves; removes trash and debris as needed.
Cleans and services restrooms; collects trash in park facilities; opens and closes restroom at beginning and end of season; adjust water supply as needed.
Monitors and maintains park facilities and equipment; repairs and replaces picnic tables, fences, and playground equipment; replaces lightbulbs and filters; performs minor plumbing, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units, carpentry, electrical repairs as needed.
Operates light to heavy machinery and equipment in the completion of daily tasks.
Assists the District Supervisor with the planning and implementation of on-site programs and park projects; develops work plans, cost estimates, and material lists for assigned projects; submits requisitions for supplies; ensures projects are in compliance with the budget.
Inspects sewer and storm lines; cleans, repairs, and replaces sewer lines as needed; patches potholes; hauls construction material; assists with snow removal and applies salt to sidewalks and roadways.
Maintains department vehicles and equipment; performs fluid checks and preventative maintenance as needed.
Completes and files maintenance records; maintains equipment service records.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, tools and materials used in park maintenance and repair work; thorough knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in park maintenance work; ability to understand, interpret, explain and apply policies and procedures; ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other departments, vendors, and the general public.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED and considerable experience conducting building and grounds repairs and maintenance, working with power and hand tools, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), working with explosives, exposure to vibration and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Valid driver’s license in the State of Indiana.
