DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks in support of recreational and community programs; and helps promote community involvement in recreational and cultural programs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Receives general direction and supervision from the Recreation Supervisor and/or the Director of Parks and Recreations. Incumbents do not routinely exercise supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential Function Statements - Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in coordinating and implementing various recreational activities, including sports leagues, youth and adult programs, and special events; collect fees for various activities; issue receipts.
- Assist with the monitoring of programs; assist with supervising instructors; provide information or resources as required; maintain records on activities.
- Monitor activities within the recreational facility; provide information to the public on recreational activities; check-in and check-out equipment.
- Assist in creation displays and advertisements for events.
- Administer seasonal programs for children; assist in training volunteers.
- Set-up rooms for recreational activities; check equipment for safety; perform minor repairs and maintenance.
Marginal Functions:
- Perform a variety of clerical functions including answering phones, filing and photocopying.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of various recreation activities.
- General recreation principles and practices.
- Basic first aid and CPR.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
- Basic mathematical principles.
- Communicate in a clear and concise manner.
- Think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.
- Follow directions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons contacted in the course of work, especially the general public.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
- Operating assigned equipment.
Experience and/or Education and/or Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Recreation Leader I: Six months volunteer or paid experience working with children and/or adults is desirable.
Recreation Leader II: 1 – 2 years volunteer or paid experience with a municipality as a Recreation Leader.
Recreation Leader III: 2 – 3 years volunteer or paid experience with a municipality as a Recreation Leader.
Recreation Leader I: High School or equivalent.
Recreation Leader II: High School or equivalent.
Recreation Leader III: High School or equivalent.
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
First aid and CPR card must be obtained within six months of hire.
Working Conditions:
Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities; exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions.
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate or light lifting of as much as 30 pounds; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking for prolonged periods of time; standing for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
Other Requirements:
Appointment to the position is contingent upon the candidate providing proof of eligibility to work in the United States and passing a pre-employment physical examination which includes a drug screening, and passing a fingerprint check and may include a thorough check of their employment history.

Pay: $16.00 - $19.45 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
