Are you looking for a fun, rewarding, and flexible summer position? Summer is just around the corner and the Community Services Department is looking for (30) Part-Time Lifeguards eager to serve the community and help create safe and fun recreation activities for all our patrons.

 

Not lifeguard certified? Sign up for one of our lifeguard training courses in March or April. Registration is available at: https://cityofrohnertpark.perfectmind.com/.  

Candidates who successfully, complete the Lifeguard training course and are hired by the City of Rohnert Park will receive full reimbursement for the cost of their Lifeguard certification upon completion of 150 hours worked.


We will be holding mandatory training between June 2- June 6, 2025. Exact times will be emailed to hired-on applicants once the schedule has been finalized. 

  

Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in one of our group interviews which will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. If you are qualified and asked to participate in a group interview but cannot attend we will try our best to make alternate interview arrangements when possible.

DEFINITION
Vigilantly monitors the safety of swimmers and guests in the aquatic facility; learns, explains, and enforces safe swimming programs, pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, AED, and light custodial work as needed; performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An employee in this classification is responsible for attentively observing swimmers, assessing and recognizing their abilities and needs, initiating actions to assist and serve  swimmers and guest, and soliciting the general public's compliance with pool policies and safety guidelines.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED
Work is performed under the supervision of a Community Services Program Coordinator (Aquatics) and Community Services Supervisor who review work primarily on the basis of direct observation and all staff in-service trainings.These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
 
  • Vigilantly monitors the safety of swimmers and other guests using aquatic facilities; constantly observes guest in assigned area
  • Performs rescues and administers emergency care and assessment as trained and necessary. Initiates or participates in a coordinated, team approach to manage incidents
  • Solicits pool guest compliance with facility-use policies and procedures. Takes an active role to initiate and perform services for guests and coworkers.
  • Responds to questions from aquatic facility guests regarding programs, activities, policies, and practices.
  • Performs light custodial maintenance duties such as hosing the deck, cleaning break room area, cleaning bathrooms, change rooms, and/or locker area as assigned and necessary
  • Handles pool covers and mat carts; removing and/or applying them back on the pool
  • Attends and participates in in-services trainings. Demonstrates retention of skills and ability to initiate action and integrate actions with other staff team members
  • Responds positively to correction and accepts direction.  Operates within progressive chains of responsibility and authority.
  • Actively participates in department programs which promote continual learning and improvement.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service skills and establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationships.
  • Performs other job-related duties or tasks as required
  • Enforces the swimming pool rules and regulations
EDUCATION/TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Any  satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, ability, maturity, and professional judgment to perform the above-describe duties.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate or equivalent
  • Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) card
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants under the age of 18, who are required to attend school, must provide a California Worker's Permit.
  • Pursuant  to  the  California  Public  Response  Code  5164,  all  applicants  for positions involving supervisory or disciplinary authority over a minor must complete and submit a CPR Code 5164.
  • Work weekends and evenings as required.
  • Because this job is considered safety sensitive, a drug screen test will be required prior to employment.

  • Possesses or obtains considerable knowledge of swimming pool and guest safety, life-guarding methods and practices, emergency care and assessment, emergency procedures, and customer service

  • Arrive promptly, prepared to accomplish responsibilities
  • Accept direction and demonstrate continual learning and improvement
Employees work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs, including working evenings, weekends, and shifting assignments as program needs change.  Employees work outdoors and are exposed to variable weather conditions. Lifeguards may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids rendering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.  Employees may interact with others who may be upset in the performance of interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.  Employee possess the ability to perform work that may involve lifting children through adults, in and out of the pool, up to 100 pounds or more with assistance, pulling a cover over the pool surface with assistance, and lifting, straightening, and moving pool deck furniture and equipment.  Need the mobility to sit, walk, twist, grasp, turn, lift, kneel, stoop, reach, bend, climb, and swim, while in swimwear.  Must be in good physical condition to stay in water for prolonged periods of time, work in the extreme heat and/or cold, and the outdoors.  Vision & hearing within the normal range.   Vision, may be corrected and hearing as measured by a standard audiogram, should be good enough to see and hear adults and children in life and/or health safety endangering situations. Manual dexterity is required for handling cash and completing reports and data entry.
