THE POSITION
THIS POSITION IS FOR THE DRAINAGE DIVISION.
The Machinist Supervisor documents, organizes, and directs staff in the Machinist series. Positions in this classification are expected to organize and supervise the daily activities to ensure regulatory, safety, and operational requirements are met. This position organizes the department's emergency response throughout the year along with ensuring each event is properly documented. The position updates the asset management system to ensure the maintenance and budgeting data is correct.
IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT
The ideal candidate will be able to organize staff and coordinate work, perform staff development, assess emergencies and find resolutions, understand the department's assets and proper operations, document thoroughly, and have good communication skills.
DEFINITION
Plans, assigns, schedules, directs, and evaluates the work of journey-level Machinists, semi-skilled Machinist Helpers and Maintenance Workers in maintaining and repairing a variety of machinery and equipment. May personally perform or assist with more complicated tasks.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from Machinist by the requirement for full-time supervisory and administrative responsiblity.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Direction is provided by management personnel. Provides direct supervision over Machinists, Machinist Helpers, and Maintenance Workers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Plan, assign, schedule, direct, and evaluate the work of Machinists, Machinist Helpers, and Maintenance Workers in maintaining, repairing, and installing mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, engines, hoists, compressors, blowers, water and wastewater facilities, and related equipment.
- Supervise and participate in the manufacture of parts for the repair of mechanical equipment.
- Prepare sketches, drawings, and written instructions for various jobs.
- Establish and implement training programs for employees in safety, materials, and methods.
- Write specifications for new and replacement equipment.
- Contact vendors to order material and spare parts for inventory.
- Maintain work time, equipment, and material records; write reports on work performed.
- Perform related duties as required.

Two years experience as a journey-level Machinist with the City of Sacramento.
Three years experience as a journey-level Machinist, preferably including one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Driver License :
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C license is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Respiratory Protective Equipment :
Work in this class requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven, when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment.
Residency Requirement :
Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th - 30th Streets within one year following appointment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD :
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

3. Eligibility : Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate's eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Machinist Supervisor examination.
4. Screening Committee : (Pass / Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. 5. Conditional Hire : Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan / fingerprinting.
