GENERAL PURPOSE
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the operations related to the upkeep, inspection, maintenance and repair of the city's parks and public spaces and grounds. Work involves supervising personnel, managing construction, repair activities, and controlling inventory to ensure a safe, aesthetic, and functional public experience for visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervises, provides guidance to, conducts performance reviews, and reviews the work of maintenance workers to accomplish operational plans and results.Plans and oversees the workflow and time utilization of staff in the assigned functional areas; schedules, assigns and communicates daily activities and deadlines to staff.Assists Manager / Superintendents in developing and evaluating work programs, resolving technical problems, and providing community responses.Implements and evaluates effective work programs, techniques, procedures, and implements safety and training programs; makes recommendations to improve work programs.Assists the Superintendent in developing and managing the Maintenance Division's biennial budget.Implements the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of outdoor public spaces, coordinating projects with municipal customers.Administers established department emergency management policies and procedures as required.Monitors construction and maintenance projects to ensure timely and cost-efficient completion; maintains standards for materials and construction; regularly inspects work-in-progress and provides technical direction as needed; troubleshoots and develops solutions for complex technical problems.Assists in managing citywide parks and grounds maintenance functions including supervision of staff and maintenance contracts, ensuring all practices and regulations are followed.Coordinates Parks maintenance contracts with private contractors and public agencies.Evaluates and implements operational programs and assigns tasks in an electronic / digital work order system to record activities and maintain pertinent records.Controls inventory for assigned functional areas.Provides information and responds to questions and complaints regarding city projects; contacts internal customers, residents, and businesses to inform them of work to be performed.Routinely works in the field to supervise the crew and assist with tasks as needed.Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.Shall be required to respond to emergency calls or arrive onsite in response to weather events and emergency situations, including evenings, weekends, and holidays based on organizational responsibilities or requirements.May fill in for superintendent on a temporary basis when necessary. This may include supervising a crew in another area.SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures and meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.Completes performance evaluations of the maintenance workers I and IIs and the maintenance leads.Manage maintenance staff to the provisions of the Union's collective bargaining agreement.Assesses and monitors workload; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes.Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates employees; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; makes recommendations regarding discipline and termination.Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED.Four (4) years of experience in general construction or related field.Previous experience, even temporary, as a lead worker, foreperson,or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and / or experience.Employees must be residents of Washington State and have the ability take a turn at standby / on call duties, to support and respond to emergency calls and / or arrive onsite during inclement weather and emergencies within (2) hours when needed, including some evenings and weekends.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines at time of hire.Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Washington State Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) after successful completion of probation.Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire, the following certifications : First Aid CPR / AED, Washington State Traffic Control Flagger.Additional Information
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous Parks maintenance and supervisory experience.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Park maintenance, horticultural practices, and principles of landscape design.Methods of natural resource programs and open space management.Materials, vehicles, equipment, and methods standard to parks and landscape construction, maintenance, and repair activities.Occupational and safety hazards and safety standards and regulatory guidelines applicable to the work.SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to prepare work schedules, prioritize assignments, problem solve, and train less experienced staff.Complete work amidst competing priorities, stressful weather and traffic conditions, and emergency situations.Use of Microsoft Suite and applicable department / organization specific software and ability to learn and become skilled in the use of other specialized software and online meeting platforms as may be required.Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing, and use professional composition, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.Ability to maintain a responsive and flexible handling of work assignments and prioritize work to complete assignments accurately and timely.Ability to maintain a customer service orientation and positive image of the city to the public, courteous and professional approach to exchanging information, and adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule.Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they can perform every job description task.
