What are the responsibilities and job description for the Librarian II (Children's Services) position at City of San Antonio?
Under general direction, performs a wide range of duties supporting the library needs of the general public with particular emphasis on the needs of children. Duties include planning, presenting, evaluating developmentally appropriate library programming; advising and assisting children in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources; conducting outreach to children in community venues including schools and child care settings; actively promoting children's use of the library and library resources; advocating for children within the library organization. Work is performed in accordance with general library policies and accepted professional practices. The advanced difficulty of work assignments and the greater independence with which work is performed differentiates this class from the Librarian I class. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May directly supervise assigned staff.

Work Hours
Work schedule varies and is based on departmental needs; Saturday - Friday work week; evenings and weekends required.

- Provides direct reference and reader’s advisory service to the public.
- Plans, presents, evaluates developmentally appropriate children’s library programming that is responsive to service-area demographics and community demand.
- Works with community partners to provide outreach service to children who may not otherwise have access to library resources.
- Designs, implements, and evaluates the promotion of children’s services in the library and in the community.
- Maintains the circulating children’s collection through weeding as well as recommending new and replacement materials.
- Assumes responsibilities for a branch or unit head in his/her absence.
- As needed, coaches staff in the branch or unit in the delivery of library service to children.
- Demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and ethical behavior.
- Exhibits critical thinking skills that support a positive and creative approach to problem solving.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science, or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.
- One (1) year of experience as a professional librarian or three (3) years of professional experience relevant to the appropriate age based group.
- No substitution for education allowed.
- Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.
- Passion for and desire to work with children (0 to 12 years) in a public library setting.
- Experience supervising daily operations of a facility and/or serving as a direct supervisor to assigned staff.
- Experience advising and instructing parents and children in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources.
- Experience providing reference and reader’s advisory instruction and assistance.
- Experience fostering and facilitating parent and child participation in the development and implementation of children’s library programming.
- Experience conducting outreach to children in community venues including schools; advocating for children in the library organization and community.
- A language proficiency, other than English.
Applicant Information
- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
