Essential Job Functions
- Searches bibliographic databases such as OCLC and library databases for accurate bibliographic records.
- Creates electronic records and produces various reports.
- Assists the public in the use of the catalog system and by answering routine reference questions at the library's information desk.
- Provides answers to ready reference questions and refers complex reference questions to the appropriate specialized librarian.
- Provides guidance to the public in the use of the library.
- Helps users find the appropriate books or information to meet their needs, occasionally lifting and carrying books and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Prepares and presents routine group service programs for children, young adults, or adults.
- Conducts tours of the library.
- Checks bibliographies or reviews journals against the catalog to determine SAPL holdings.
- Serves on staff committees as assigned by Library Administrator.
- Assists with computer sign-up and circulation duties.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- Two (2) years of college from an accredited college or university.
- Two (2) years of library experience involving circulation, cataloging or reference assistance.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in Liberal Arts or a related field.
- Proficient in Spanish.
- Experience in providing service to the general public.

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
- Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

- Knowledge of Dewey decimal classification system.
- Ability to learn and use established library methods.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Ability to assist users with general reference questions.
