About The Position:

The Equipment Service Worker is an entry level position in the Fleet section of the Public Works Department. The Equipment Service Worker will perform a variety of routine to semi-skilled duties in the maintenance, modification, and repair of vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Services Division. Work may require carrying out routine welding assignments involved in the fabrication and/or repair of integrated waste bins and other items.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Operates, uses, and safely applies equipment and shop tools; works with welding equipment to refurbish and prepare integrated waste bins; replaces castors, handles, lids, and metal sleeves.

Fuels, lubricates, and services vehicles and equipment and replaces hoses, belts and fittings; cleans, washes and polishes vehicles and equipment; steam cleans integrated waste trucks and fire apparatus; checks vehicles for damages and performs minor body and fender work.

Works as a helper to journey-level mechanics; assists, supports, and participates in performing overhauls and repairs; changes tires and assists in making tire repairs; changes and replaces oil and performs other mechanical tasks.

Monitors, tracks, and evaluates preventative maintenance schedules and procedures to maximize asset availability and cost effectiveness; follows safe work practices and procedures in performing assigned duties.

Receives incoming parts and supplies, determines location for items, and ensures efficient delivery of items for limited disruption to services; opens purchase orders, maintains and uses catalogs and vendor books, and places orders when requested; works and engages with vendors to expedite special or urgent orders

Develop and determine effective parts processes for both internal and external customers; maintains inventory and coordinates vendors; oversees management of equipment, merchandise, supplies, and products

Performs shop housekeeping duties.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic operations and maintenance of vehicle systems and components.
  • Use and maintenance of basic shop, hand and power tools, such as sockets, wrenches, torque wrenches, pneumatic wrenches, greasing tools and other related tools.
  • Operation of arc and gas welding equipment and basic welding procedures.
  • Types and grades of lubricants, coolants, brake, steering and other fluids used in automotive and equipment servicing.
  • Use and maintenance of tire-changing and balancing equipment.
  • Safe working practices and safety equipment related to the work.
  • Federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and clean air requirements
  • City policies, procedures, and standards.

Skills in:
  • Operating basic shop, hand and power tools, vehicle hoists and jacks.
  • Operating tire-changing and balancing equipment.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Keeping basic logs and records.
  • Performing routine welding and fabrication work.
  • Preparing basic records and reports.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Properly maintaining and operating power driving construction tools and equipment.
  • Providing customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

AND

One (1) year of experience in vehicle and equipment servicing, basic welding or similar work in the trade; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

A valid California driver’s license is required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

The employee works in typical shop conditions and the noise level is usually loud. The employee works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to fumes, particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet, hot and/or humid conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk and sit. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear conversations, equipment operating and warning sounds. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.


Supplemental Information

BENEFITS AND REWARDS
The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement – Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
  • Health Insurance – Monthly contribution of $738.00 (Employee Only), $1,450.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,939.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave – Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance – The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
