About the Role:
Join the Communications Department as the Public Safety Media Services Program Manager, leading the charge in delivering accurate and consistent messages about San Diego’s Fire-Rescue Department. Under the guidance of the Communications Department Director, you'll collaborate with the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and various city departments to develop strategic communications plans and impactful outreach campaigns. This role involves serving as a liaison with the mass media, crafting and managing content across multiple platforms, coordinating public outreach, and managing crisis communications during emergencies. The Communications Department educates and engages the public and City employees, overseeing the City's website and social media content, responding to media inquiries, and producing engaging videos and printed materials. ** Please note: This position will require work in the evenings, weekends and on holidays, as the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is a 24-hour, 7-day per week operation.**
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience that meets the following qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, public administration, policy, business management or a related field OR;
- 8 years of professional level public relations, media relations or journalism experience
Desirable Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- 3 years of experience in managing crisis communications working in emergency management, overseeing communications on behalf of a public safety agency, and supporting a 24/7 operation.
- Strongly preferred to be fluent in both English and Spanish.
- Excellent writing and copyediting skills.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills while interacting with a diverse range of stakeholders, including the community, media, and government officials.
- Familiarity with public sector emergency management best practices and incident command structures.
- Experience developing and leading successful outreach and educational campaigns in collaboration with stakeholders and partner organizations.
- Proficient in video recording and editing software, skilled in navigating social media platforms and web publishing tools, and adept at creating engaging presentations for the public.
