Maintenance Worker (Temporary)Open until filled - 1st screening 3/24/25Limited to 29 hours per week during regular work hoursMonday – Thursday 6:30am – 5:00pm. Actual schedule determined by Chief of Public Utilities to meet the needs of the DepartmentUnder close supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled public works maintenance tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, signs, striping, painting, building maintenance, tree trimming, debris removal and street light repairs. Although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Maintenance Worker (Temp), the equipment is used on a training basis for tasks which are repetitious in nature. Under training concept, positions assigned to the class of Maintenance Worker which become vacant may reasonably be filled by incumbents in Maintenance Worker (Temp) positions. General, technical, or functional supervision is provided by the Lead Worker – Streets/Parks/Storm or designee. This position may be assigned to any task specified by the Chief of Public Utilities including assisting other divisions.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions: Perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, signs, striping, painting, building, maintenance, tree trimming, debris removal, and street light repairs.Perform a variety of tasks pertaining to street patching and cement replacementOperate a jackhammer.Cut streets and prepare for patches, spread premix and oil, and rake asphalt.Clean and maintain basic tools and equipment used on the job.Operate power-driven equipment on a relief or training basis.Utilize appropriate power and hand tools as required for work assigned.Respond to citizen complaints tactfully and promptly.Report back in a timely manner to supervisor regarding assignments.Paint City streets.Install signs.Perform building maintenance on City buildings as assigned.May require 24-hour a day emergency call back.Understand occupational and safety precautions.Coordinate and verify contractor estimates and invoices as assigned.Report progress and completed tasks to designated Lead or Supervisor.Actively gain experience operating a loader and other heavy equipment. Knowledge of: Knowledge and proper use of maintenance tools and equipment.General construction conceptsSafe work practicesGeneral Public Works traffic control and safety precautions.Basic usage of Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Access, Windows), and other job-specific software programs as it pertains to this position.How to utilize the internet to navigate to web-based training and timekeeping systems. Skills: Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, and right of way areas.Thoroughly follow oral and written directions.Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work.Organize and prioritize work with sound judgment, commonsense, and selfinitiative. Ability to: Understand and apply occupational and safety precautions and training.Act effectively under stressful or emergency situations.Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work.Provide excellent customer service.Follow oral and written directions.Use Judgement and initiative in carrying out work and objectives established by management staff.Operate a jackhammer.Operate a pressure-washer.Clean and maintain basic hand/power tools and equipment used on the job.Operate power-driven equipment on a relief or training basis.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff and customers.Communicate, report progress and completed tasks to designated Lead utilizing cell phone. Operate a personal computer and software at a basic level; limited operation of common office equipment such as computer monitors, photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, and telephones.Work Authorization/Security Clearance Must complete a post-offer/pre-employment Department of Justice finger printing, criminal background screening, employment and reference check, medical physical, and alcohol and drug screening. Work authorization Work authorization is required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, is mandatory within three business days of hire.Department of Transportation Requirements This position is subject to the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Drug & Alcohol Compliance Policy, including a random drug testing program.Disaster Service Worker Requirements Under California Government Code Sections 3100-3109, public employees are designated as disaster service workers. The term "public employees" includes all persons employed by the state or any county, city, state agency, or public district. Disaster service workers are required to participate in disaster service activities as may be assigned to them by their employer or by law.
