What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Specialist position at City of San Luis?
Under general supervision, provides support to various recreational services and activities sponsored by the City of San Luis and performs grounds and pool maintenance.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a journey level classification. Incumbents perform a variety of duties related to the implementation/execution of planned programmatic activities or events; and participate in actual program planning, development and evaluation, and may supervise lower level assigned recreation staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 30 pounds unaided.
Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information and documents; analyzes and solves problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; performs highly detailed work; deals with multiple concurrent tasks; and interacts with others encountered in the course of work, including frequent contact with customers and/or the public and dissatisfied/abusive individuals.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements. Vision is required to perform and monitor essential functions, and to complete data entry. There is need to stand,
stoop, walk, and lift heavy objects (over 50 pounds occasionally) during the course of the workday. Requires the use of a vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely.

- Assists with, coordinates, and/or oversees recreational activities at the City Gymnasium, Youth Center, Cultural Center, Municipal Pool, and other facilities.
- Leads, and participates in, recreational activities.
- Provide classes as an instructor to youth relating to recreational activities such as sport, arts, dance, and more.
- Ability to instruct large groups Youth.
- Communicate and collaborate with local schools, agencies, programs, businesses and local groups.
- Coordinates training sessions and participates in special recreational events.
- Maintains discipline and safety/sanitary standards.
- Maintains records of gym usage, scheduled activities and events, vehicle usage, and office supplies and reports information to Supervisor.
- Interprets and explains game rules, organizes sports teams, and/or officiates at recreational games and events.
- Receives, unpacks, stores, and transports recreational materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Coaches sports teams at practice sessions as required.
- Performs basic cleaning and maintenance of the gym facility and surrounding grounds.
- Prepares (lines and rakes) baseball fields.
- Assists in grounds/park cleaning and maintenance as required or assigned.
- May record information about games such as player names, scores, forfeits, violations, protests, league standings, schedules, etc.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Principles, rules, materials, equipment, and organization of recreational activities.
- Rules and regulations applicable to sporting events.
- Safety and sanitary practices and procedures and related standards and regulations.
- Grounds and building maintenance.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and interacting with the public.
- Maintain discipline and handling emergency situations.
- Implement rules and regulating the conduct of activity participants.
- Prepare and maintain activity records.
- Stimulate interest and enthusiasm among others.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years full-time work coaching, coordinating, or officiating organized recreational activities/sports.
- Fluency in both English and Spanish.
- A valid Arizona driver’s license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.
Desired/Preferred:
- San Luis residency.
