What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Sports Referee position at City of Sandpoint?
The primary function of an employee in this class is to officiate and/or keep score at designated sports games. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor or a Youth Sports Coordinator, although some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of the position are performed in an indoor gymnasium or an outdoor sports field that may expose the employee to adverse weather conditions or excessive noise.
- Officiates and keeps the official time at designated sports games.
- Instructs and supervises players during competitions.
- Runs pre-game skills clinics when applicable.
- Serves as a positive role model for the players, parents, coaches and fellow officials by following all rules and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
- Corresponds with parents, officials, coaches and scorekeepers and completes paperwork when necessary.
- Provides a safe and enjoyable environment for all players, giving each child an equal opportunity to participate.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Assists other staff with assignments and duties as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
- Rules, regulations, officiating techniques, and score keeping for designated sports.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively with players, spectators, coaches, other City employees, and the public.
- Enforce rules and regulations of designated sports.
- Work well under pressure and maintain a calm and professional demeanor under stressful or adversarial conditions.
Physical Demands:
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person during a competitive game situation.

Special Qualifications
- First Aid/CPR certification is preferred.
- Satisfactory criminal background investigation for applicants 18 years of age or older.
