This position stems from a recent merger by the City of Sanford that will significantly expand our reach and influence in the industry. The LUMW will work with Pittsboro and City of Sanford customers to perform the following duties:
- Installs, maintains and repairs water and/or wastewater lines and appurtenances; operates equipment; makes service connections; maintains rights-of-way.
- Coordinates the day-to-day activities of assigned crew members.
- Provides instruction and training to assigned crew members.
- Assists supervisor with preparing work schedules.
- Installs, repairs, cleans and inspects water and/or sewer mains, meter, hydrants, valves, cleanouts and other equipment; makes water and/or sewer taps.
- Operates all equipment including backhoe, jet-vac, tractor, and related equipment in the performance of job tasks on a limited basis.
- Prepares and maintains reports, logs, files, and other related documents.
- Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment; inspects vehicles and equipment.
- Clears rights-of-way; conducts smoke tests.
- Sets up traffic control to ensure safety of workzone, special event, and emergency situations.
- Performs minor landscaping on property after work is completed.
- Attends required training; ensures crew members adhere to department and safety policies, procedures and regulations.
- Assists other crews, divisions and departments as needed.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
We are looking for a detailed individual who possesses Thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures; thorough knowledge in reading and interpreting blue prints and maps associated with water and wastewater infrastructure; thorough knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances; general knowledge of OSHA regulations; thorough knowledge in the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; general knowledge in preparing and maintaining reports, logs, files and other related documents; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms; ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to make S.S.O. calculations, footage calculations, and pipe size, diameter and capacity calculations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Special Requirements
The position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and moderate experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and/or sewer lines. Possession of a valid Class “B” North Carolina commercial driver’s license upon hire; may be required to obtain a Class “A” commercial driver’s license. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for the division which assigned to include. Confined Space, North Carolina DOT Flagger, Work Zone and Traffic Control, and Trenching and Excavation within six months of employment.
