Department: Police Department
Description of Work/Duties:
- Performs intermediate technical work on an assigned rotating shift (4 on, 4 off shift; rotating between days and nights, 6am - 6pm & 6pm - 6am) dispatching law enforcement for emergency and non-emergency calls for service;
- Operates emergency communication system; obtains necessary information and dispatches medical, fire and law enforcement personnel and/or advises callers of proper contact for assistance or information; answers emergency and non-emergency calls; receives complaints and requests for service;
- Operates a computer terminal; transmits and receives information via Department of Criminal Information (DCI) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) networks; enters medical, fire and law enforcement calls into computer aided dispatch system;
- Operates multi-line telephone and various computer and communications equipment;
- Monitors radio channels for medical, fire and law enforcement agencies; maintains radio contact with dispatched personnel;
- Maintains communication logs and reports;
- Assists other law enforcement agencies as needed with emergency and non-emergency information; Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
General knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system; general knowledge of radio and teletype procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; general knowledge of law enforcement forms, terminology and records; general knowledge of departmental programs, policies and procedures; general knowledge in preparing reports and other documents; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to perform a considerable volume of detailed work; ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to speak distinctly; ability to deal with the public under stressful conditions and remain calm; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Special Requirements
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire. Must obtain North Carolina Division of Criminal Information Terminal Operator, Emergency Medical Dispatch and CPR certifications within six months of employment. Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.
