The mission of the Fire Department is to provide fire protection, emergency medical rescue and related life safety service to Santa Barbara’s citizens and visitors. The prevention division strives to protect life, property and the environment from the perils of fire, hazardous material incidents, and other disasters through effective code enforcement, new development plan checks, wildfire mitigation, fire investigation and support of the engine company fire inspection program. THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Fire Department is seeking a knowledgeable Fire Services Specialist. The Fire Services Specialist works under the direction of the Fire Marshal and the Fire Inspector II assigned to the Wildland Interface Program, providing administrative support and technical assistance for the City of Santa Barbara's High Fire Hazard Area programs.
Duties may include:
- Initiate and perform defensible space evaluations.
- Provide direction for vegetation management projects including assisting with contract administration and supervising contractors.
- Receive and handle complaints, questions and requests from the public including performing code compliance enforcement, inspections and follow-up.
- Write requests for proposals, prepare estimates of project costs, supervise/administer, and maintain associated financial records including preparation of reports and necessary documentation which incorporates any outside departmental funds, such as grants.
- Conduct wildland fire public education and outreach presentations including presenting program policies and procedures to officials of public and private agencies.
- May respond to emergency situations and performs a variety of office operations, special projects and assignments or other duties that may be required.
This is a classified, non-safety position.
Hybrid/Flexible Work Schedule: This position has the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule. Schedules are dependent upon operational needs and are subject to change. Details of teleworking considerations can be addressed during the interview process.

Knowledge of:
- Modern principles of fuel management, techniques, practices and effects.

- Implement the City's Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District plan.

- Respond to all interested parties, both orally and in writing regarding related inquiries.
- Prepare reports and recommendations concerning suggestions for changes in departmental policies, procedures and budgeting considerations.
- Operate a PC system and utilize computer applications for vegetation management.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One (1) year of experience in vegetation management or related field is desirable.
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in horticulture, agriculture, fire science or a related field is desirable.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:

Salary : $75,584 - $91,873
