THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Information Technology Department is seeking a motivated, innovative and customer service-oriented Help Desk Technician I or II. This position is responsible for providing support for the City's computers and users across all City departments. Incumbents will determine user needs, install, maintain, operate, and configure computer hardware and software, and provide a variety of technical duties as required.
Hybrid/Flexible Work Schedule: This position has the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule. Schedules are dependent upon operational needs and are subject to change. Details of teleworking considerations can be addressed during the interview process.
Distinguishing Characteristics
At the level I position: This is the entry-level class in the Information Technology Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Information Technology Technician II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including participating in routine computer support activities including less complex troubleshooting and hardware installation. The Technician I will have limited network administration rights. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
At the level II position: This is the full journey level class within the Information / Technology Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Information / Technology Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including network administration rights, installing new computers and software, and troubleshooting computer problems. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the “I” level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience.
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles and methods of personal computer configuration and operation.
- Basic principles and methods of computer networking hardware.
- Basic principles of computer science.
- Computer peripherals and accessories.
- A variety of software programs.
- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
Ability to:
- Assist in troubleshooting PC hardware and software problems and effect a solution.
- Assist in training computer users on computer software programs.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Information Technology Technician I
Experience: Some personal computer experience including working with a variety of software programs.
Education and/or Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in computer science or a related field.
Information / Technology Technician II
In addition to the qualifications for Information / Technology Technician I:
Knowledge of:
Principles and methods of computer configuration and operations.
Principles and methods of computer networking hardware.
Principles of data communications standards and implementation.
Ability to:
Perform complex and journey level computer support activities.
Troubleshoot hardware and software problems and effect a solution.
Train computer users.
Operate a variety of computers, including a variety of software programs.
Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible computer support experience including installation and maintenance activities and working with a variety of software programs.
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in computer science or a related field.
