THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department is seeking a Streets Maintenance Worker I/II to join our Streets Team. Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of duties including maintenance, construction, installation and repair of City streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and pavement markings. Install street barricades, cones and direct traffic around worksites. Operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and power tools. Maintain hand tools, assigned equipment and vehicles. Rake and spread asphalt; seal cracks and patch streets; construct forms, lay concrete and finish concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. Maintain and clear waterways. Prepare, install, repair, and replace City signposts and signs. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner. Respond to emergencies as needed and support special events. Note: Offers of employment may be made at the Streets Maintenance Worker I or II level depending on experience.

- Modern off practices, including use of a personal computer and use of computerized work order program.
Ability to:
- Safely perform heavy physical labor.
- Learn to perform a variety of maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
- Learn basic techniques of concrete asphalt patching, painting, maintenance and repair.
- Perform inspections and troubleshoot complex construction and maintenance problems from written and oral instructions.
- Assess difficult situations and make recommendations and/or develop solutions.
- Read and inspect basic maps, blueprints, diagrams, and equipment manuals.
- Maintain inventory and arrange for supplies/equipment as necessary.
- Properly plan and execute jobs.
- Maintain work records.
- Respond to a variety of information inquiries and public complaints in a courteous manner.
- Work cooperatively with coworkers.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including other City staff and the general public.
- Operate computer systems and project/asset management software.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Two (2) years of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance and construction is highly desirable.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license at time of appointment. Must be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license within 180 days of appointment.
