Description / Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leaders to work directly with the public at the front counter of the Valencia Community Center. Under the leadership of the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinator, these positions will be responsible for assisting residents with their registration inquiries, collecting payments, and maintaining paperwork.

These positions may work up to 20 hours per week and must have the ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Actual hours may vary.

Recreation Leader I

17.38 - $18.44 per hour

Duties And Responsibilities :

  • Assists with front counter operations, including greeting residents and participants, answering phones and emails, and providing program and general information to visitors and callers
  • Registers patrons for programs / classes using registration software; processes memberships in the recreation software system
  • Maintains a professional attitude and provides excellent customer service to participants; answers inquiries; and effectively addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise
  • Assists with various Community Center programs and events, including the summer and afterschool program, classes, special events, etc.
  • Assists with organization, setup, and cleanup of facility; maintains facility equipment
  • Tracks and files participant registration and transaction data each season
  • Completes and updates various forms, calendars, logs, and reports
  • Tracks, inventories, and organizes supplies
  • Proofreads class / registration information and materials for use on website, brochure, flyers, etc.
  • Collaborates with other program areas, as requested
  • Attends meetings and training sessions at various City facilities, as needed
  • Purchases and picks up materials and supplies with provided budget, as needed
  • Ensures safety of site in accordance with emergency procedures and reports incidents / accidents; follows and enforces City policies
  • Performs other activities and duties as directed by the Recreation Supervisor and Coordinators

Education And Experience :

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent is highly desirable
  • A valid Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related essential functions may be required
  • Completion of college courses is highly desirable
  • Six months of volunteer or paid experience in recreation, community services, customer service, or other related public service experience
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one month of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR / AED / First Aid
  • A combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered
  • Recreation Leader II

    18.68 - $19.82 per hour

    Recreation Leader II includes all of the responsibilities of the Recreation Leader I, in addition to the following :

    Duties And Responsibilities :

  • Operates cash register, handles cash and other tenders of payment, such as debit and credit cards; conducts closeout process
  • Processes refunds and transfers
  • Manages program waitlists
  • Review and proofreads the Seasons brochure for clarity, accuracy, and consistency
  • Oversees facility opening and closing procedures
  • Assists with training staff on registration functions
  • Education And Experience :

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
  • A valid Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related essential functions may be required
  • Completion of college courses is highly desirable
  • One year of paid experience in recreation, community services, customer service, or other related public service experience
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one month of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR / AED / First Aid
  • A combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered

  • Ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines and think creatively to solve problems effectively
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner
  • Ability to travel to various city facilities, if necessary
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including nights and weekends)
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds or more is required occasionally

    As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

    In compliance with California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

    In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

    PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
