The Position
The City of Santee is seeking service-oriented individuals interested in establishing a rewarding and challenging career as EMTs with the Santee Fire Department! The City has six (6) vacancies for full-time / temporary 56-hour pilot position EMTs (non-safety, with benefits).
These positions are currently funded under a one-year pilot program only, and continued employment beyond June 30, 2025 will be subject to City Council approval.
Under the general direction of a Fire Captain, EMTs respond to medical emergencies and other emergency and non-emergency situations; participate in training, prevention, inspection, education, and related activities to protect life and property; perform fire station and equipment maintenance; serve in specialized departmental roles as assigned; provide information and assistance to the public; and perform other related duties as required.
EMTs in this classification will be assigned to a 24-hour shift schedule with a 56-hour work week, and will work alongside a paramedic partner on a fire department advanced life support (ALS) ambulance. Overtime compensation is paid for all hours worked beyond 40 hours in a Sunday - Saturday work week. EMTs classified as 56-hour employees under this pilot program will be subject to mandatory overtime as needed to ensure the continuous staffing of the fire department's ALS ambulances.

Representative Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Safely responding to fire, medical, and other emergency calls with an emergency response team;
- Perform emergency medical patient assessment and treatment as indicated and necessary in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Treatment Protocol / Policies for EMT level care;
- Provide emergency medical care as needed with ALS fire companies and on the ALS ambulance, and assist in the maintenance and replenishment of medical equipment, medication, and supplies;
- Maintain records and prepare written reports;
- Obtain the required certifications to drive and operate staff vehicles and ambulances as required;
- Assist in the maintenance of vehicles, and equipment, fire station, and grounds;
- Attend drills, training and conferences;
- Learn fire department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and techniques; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Must be able to perform a wide range of physical duties to include : constant upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; simple grasping and repetitive use of hands to hold radios, equipment and property; fine finger dexterity to manipulate apparatus controls, computer keyboard and writing utensils; lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs; frequent walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing and squatting; bending and twisting at the waist; pushing, pulling and reaching above and below shoulder level; power grasping; walking on uneven ground; driving; lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds from below waist to above shoulder level; occasional running, crawling; lifting and carrying objects and persons weighing more than 100 lbs. with or without assistance. Minimum Qualifications
All candidates for this classification must meet the following :
Licenses and Certificates : Candidates must possess a Class C California driver's license by the date of hire and must have California EMT-B certification with accreditation in San Diego County at the time of hire (San Diego County EMT-B certification must be maintained throughout employment).

Santee fire personnel hired after 7 / 1 / 09 shall not smoke or use any tobacco products, either on or off-duty, while employed by the City of Santee.
The applicant(s) selected will be subject to the successful completion of a pre-employment physical that includes a drug screen, a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ), employment reference checks, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.
City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
