What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Inspector position at City of Schertz?
POSITION SUMMARY :
The Building Inspector assists with the administration and enforcement of codes and ordinances adopted by the City of Schertz. This is accomplished by enforcing life safety requirements on all construction activity in the City, aiding with all aspects in the permitting process, responding to code issues with the public, and performing daily inspections.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provides outstanding service to internal staff and customers.
- Reviews applications, examines plans and permits for new and existing construction.
- Processes incoming emails, calls and messages regarding permit and inspection procedures, building code regulations, city ordinances, and state and federal law applicable to construction practices.
- Conducts daily inspections and assists other inspectors for large or complex inspections.
- Schedules inspections for customer walk-ins, contractors and inspectors.
- Inspects sites throughout the construction processes in order to ensure compliance with the applicable codes.
- Identifies complex problems and reviews related information in order to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Makes recommendations to the Chief Building Official for code changes and amendments.
- Assists in the investigation and structural damage evaluation of fires involving structures.
- Inspects buildings which are to be moved in or into the municipality for compliance.
- Investigates and resolves complaints received by the department from the public concerning alleged code violations.
- Makes recommendations to the Chief Building Official for improvements in field procedures, methods and policies.
- Performs necessary research and applies basic theory of business elements of the construction field to the plan review process.
- Keeps Chief Building Official alerted to any conditions in the field, which are potentially troublesome or controversial.
- Issues citations for violations of ordinances applicable to the activities of the Inspection Department.
- Meets with the public and answers questions or gives information concerning city codes and ordinances.
- Prepares and maintains files, prepares reports and records for local use.
- May be required to respond to after hour and emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
