What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Classification Consultant position at City of Seattle?
Seattle Human Resources endeavors to promote an equitable and engaging work environment so employees can do their best work and make a difference for the people and communities we serve. The Department focuses on providing high-quality services to all City employees and departments and works collaboratively with department leaders to align policies, practices, and programs citywide to fulfill the vision of workforce equity and excellence.
As part of this mission, the Compensation & Classification unit administers the Citywide job classification and compensation programs for approximately 12,500 regular employees and more than 1,200 job classifications. This work champions internal and external equity by taking meaningful steps to ensure that similar bodies of work and levels of responsibility are paid similarly across all City departments, and that all positions are compensated fairly and competitively in the market. We are looking for a Senior Classification Consultant to support these goals.
The three main focus areas for this role include:
Acting as a team lead for classification services:
- Training and developing team members
- Assigning and reassigning work
- Monitoring and advising on workload capacity
- Providing first-level review of classification work products
- Completing operational improvement projects to support the consistent delivery of high-quality classification services
- Providing advice and feedback to ensure services are adhering to established standards, processes, and templates
- Acting as a point of escalation for journey-level team members for the most complex and sensitive classification services across all client groups
Performing the full range of classification services for an assigned client group:
- Consulting with HR partners, Labor Relations partners, and department leaders
- Performing classification reviews
- Leading classification reconsideration meetings
- Developing and modifying classification titles and specifications
- Advising on job architecture
Overseeing and completing classification projects:
- Managing single- and multi-department classification projects
- Reviewing deliverables from consultants
- Coordinating and ensuring timely completion of classification services that are part of larger Citywide compensation projects
You will be most successful in this role with a combination of the following:
Experience in:
- Classifying a high volume of positions within a large, complex, and decentralized organization
- Job evaluation, particularly using traditional classification methods and point factor job evaluation
- Working in an organization with multiple professional fields, including union-represented positions
- Reviewing established processes and identifying areas for improvement
- Organizational design
The ability to:
- Analyze a role and differentiate between the class specifications in a job series
- Advise clients at all levels of the organization, including senior executives
- Effectively learn and follow established processes, as well as shift easily and help train team members when changes in process are implemented
- Effectively prioritize a high volume of tasks, balance competing priorities, and deliver the highest-value work products on time
- Act as a technical advisor for large scale classification and compensation projects
- Work independently when completing most functions and know when to advise, collaborate, and seek consultation
Skills or Certification in:
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification
- Attention to detail
- Strong writing skills, particularly to thoroughly document analysis for classification determinations
- Personal computer and enterprise software, including Microsoft Office suite
- Learning and effectively using other software programs quickly to fulfill work functions
- Building and maintaining trusting working relationships
- Organization, including organizational tools
- Understanding federal, state, and local compensation laws
In addition to the ability to perform the tasks described above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management, Business or Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field
- Three years in classification and compensation, performing other human resources-related tasks, or a related field
OR
- Associate Degree in Human Resource Management, Business or Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field
- Four years in classification and compensation, performing other human resources-related tasks, or a related field
OR
- Five years in classification and compensation, performing other human resources-related tasks, or a related field
This civil-service position is classified as a Personnel Analyst, Senior-Compensation and reports to the Compensation Program Manager. The full pay range for this step-progression position is $51.22 - $59.63 per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $53.27 hourly. Current City employees starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.
First round interviews for this position are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, January 29 and/or Thursday, January 30, 2025. Second interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Tuesdays are an in-office day for the team. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor and are subject to change.
