Position Description
The challenge course at Camp Long is focused on education and opening the outdoors to youth of all cultural and racial backgrounds. We are looking for facilitators who are passionate about working with diverse groups of youth and helping them feel safe and brave in the outdoors!
Facilitators will lead groups in teambuilding on the low challenge course and work towards leading groups on the high challenge course by their second summer. They will also learn to belay on Schurman Rock, the oldest human-made rock wall in the country, and give young participants the exciting experience of climbing on real rocks! This position has work opportunities all year round, with a much higher consistency of work in the late spring, summer, and early fall.
Our facilitators attend 4H challenge course training during the spring of their first season, then spend their first summer working towards technical and educational proficiency on the low challenge course where teambuilding gets off the ground! New facilitators will be expected to attain this certification within 6 months of training. There is the opportunity during the first season to begin training on and apprenticing on the high challenge course as well, at supervisor discretion.
Job Responsibilities
- Attend all trainings for 4H challenge course certification and rock belay training.
- Dates: March 1, 2, and 8 (all dates required) and April 5 and 6 (both dates required). Additional training dates for high challenge course can be discussed upon hire.
- Facilitate teambuilding activities on the ground, the low challenge course, the rock wall, and potentially the high challenge course at Camp Long.
- Create program plans for teambuilding programs in a short amount of time
- Manage risk for participants of all ages
- Provide a safe and supportive environment for groups of all ages and backgrounds to learn and grow
- Set up and tear down course equipment, including carrying loads of up to 50lbs on a regular basis
- Acquire and maintain a first aid certification and be ready to respond with first aid for groups at Camp Long

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires one year experience in a community-based recreation program and an associate degree in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Desired Qualifications:
- The ability to be flexible and assess safety and learning in a dynamic environment
- Active first aid certification (required within first 6 months of employment)
- Experience working on low challenge course elements and belaying on rock walls
- Experience working with diverse populations outdoors including folks with disabilities
- Ability to speak a second language

The full salary range for this position is $32.90 - $44.05 per hour.The City of Seattle offers a comprehensive benefits package including vacation, holiday and sick leave as well as medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance for employees and their dependents.
