What are the responsibilities and job description for the ANIMAL SHELTER SUPERVISOR position at City of Sherwood AR?
JOB OBJECTIVE: Under general direction, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing the services and activities of the Animal Services unit as it falls within the Police Department infrastructure, including the enforcement of City ordinances and state laws relating to animal control activities as well as the operations of the City’s animal shelter; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; and performs the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, prioritize, supervise, evaluate, and participate in the work of staff by assigning and reviewing work, training employees, counseling, and maintaining work and leave schedules.
- Directs the enforcement of all related city ordinances to provide for public safety; responsible for directing policies, procedures, and regulations for the department.
- Recommends amendments to existing City ordinances and prepares suggestions for new ordinances for approval by the Mayor and the City Council.
- Research, review, and interpret ordinances pertaining to Animal Services.
- Must be prepared and able to euthanize animals in the shelter as needed.
- Prepares and develops a budget for the Department.
- Identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
- Develops and implements needed programs and oversees their operation.
- Coordinates a public relations program to foster public awareness of ordinances regarding Animal Services and humane treatment of animals.
- Make public presentations before groups and represent the department and the city at meetings and conferences.
- Perform all duties of an animal control officer, shelter assistant and worker.
- Investigates violations of Animal Services ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required; appears in court to testify regarding Animal Services cases.
- Works closely with the media, public interest groups and businesses to promote improved care and control of animals.
- Works to build and maintain relationships with rescue groups and non-profit groups that can assist with improving animal welfare in the shelter and in the City of Sherwood as a whole.
- Must process and do monthly data reports and process annual reports as well.
- Perform all other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements and preferences listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required and/or preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school or GED, plus additional specialized training in animal care and control, supervisory techniques, and/or law enforcement, is desirable. Four years of responsible animal services experience in animal control and shelter operations including 2 years of administrative and/or lead supervisory experience.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Either possess or be able to obtain within six (6) months of hiring, a certification to euthanize animals.
- Either possess or be able to obtain within six (6) months a National Animal Control Officer Certification.
- Either possess or be able to obtain a Controlled Substance Registration Certificate from Drug Enforcement Administration, within 1 year of hire.
- Either possess or be able to obtain a Certificate for Controlled Substance Registration with Arkansas Department of Health. Within 1 year of employment.
- Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.
