What are the responsibilities and job description for the Broadband Install Technician position at City of Sherwood?
Under general direction, provide installation, maintenance, and technical support to broadband users. Duties may include, installing fiberoptic and copper data cabling on and in customer homes, splicing fiber optic cables, testing data cabling, and helping customers configure and connect to the broadband service. This position will serve as a liaison between the broadband utility and the customer and therefore this position must provide a high-level of customer care and service experience.
This description covers the most significant essential and auxiliary duties performed by the position, but does not include other occasional work, which may be similar, related to, or a logical assignment for the position.
Essential Duties:
Auxiliary Duties: Provide assistance to other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: General knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance of vehicles, tools and equipment, practices, methods, hazards, and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of broadband infrastructure. General knowledge of Fiber Optic splicing, testing and low voltage installation techniques, AC and DC circuits, and general construction methods. Knowledge of TCP/IP networks and how to configure and troubleshoot network issues in a home or business environment. Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
Ability to: Prioritize and organize tasks within specific timelines, provide excellent customer service, interact with customers, and demonstrate a positive experience. Ability to exercise good judgement, courtesy, patience and tack in public contact and problem resolution. Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and to make decisions with minimal supervision. Effectively operate personal computers and associated software.
Education and Experience: Typical education would include the equivalent to high school education or GED. Typical experience would include one year of related experience working as a Low Voltage Technician and/or Installer, preferable with a telecommunications services provider and/or a job performing fiber optic splicing services or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.
Special Requirements/Licenses: Possession of valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Confined space training completed within 90 days of hire.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Electronics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Certificate in Electronics Repair from a Technical School.
- Certification from Electronics Technicians Association.
- Certification from Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers.
- Or other certification related to the installation of fiber optic and data cabling.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, climb, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 20 pounds on a regular basis such as files, tools, equipment, etc., and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 75% of the work period while performing installation functions. Must be able to visually distinguish colors.
Working Conditions: The duties take place inside and outside of buildings with exposure to all types of weather conditions and on a year-round basis. May frequently work on ladders and in confined spaces. Direct interaction with customers will occur daily. May require working on rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
