Position Overview:
The City of South Hutchinson is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Wastewater Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works Department. This position is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining wastewater treatment plant equipment, infrastructure, and the collection system. The role plays a vital part in ensuring the effective treatment of wastewater, maintenance of facility equipment, and compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Wastewater Treatment & Monitoring: Monitor and operate treatment plant equipment, including aeration basins, blowers, compressors, pumps, and lift stations. Collect and analyze samples for laboratory testing and sludge depth measurements.
- Maintenance & Repairs: Perform routine and emergency repairs on plant equipment, collection systems, and lift stations. Maintain and repair equipment such as UV disinfection systems, bar screens, grit removal systems, and valves.
- Operational Logging & Reporting: Record and interpret meter readings, operational logs, and other necessary reports to document system performance.
- Equipment Handling: Operate solids handling equipment such as gravity belt thickeners and belt presses. Ensure safe handling of chemicals and maintain safety standards.
- General Maintenance Tasks: Maintain and operate lawnmowers, tractors, service trucks, and heavy equipment. Respond to alarms and emergency situations as they arise.
- Collaboration: Assist with general maintenance for other departments as required and provide snow removal services during winter months.
Position Requirements:
· At least one year of related experience is preferred. Employees must demonstrate proficiency in all required skills within six months of employment.
· High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or college credits preferred.
· Class II Wastewater Operator Certification from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is preferred at hire and required within one year of eligibility.
· Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license and maintain a clean driving record. Class B CDL is preferred at hire and required within six months.
· Strong knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
· Basic computer skills and familiarity with city and state regulatory compliance.
· Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, especially under supervision.
· Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in all weather conditions.
· Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with team members and other departments.
· Must be able to lift heavy objects and perform physical tasks such as bending, twisting, and working overhead.
· Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.55 - $24.75 per hour
