Join the Parks and Recreation Team in South Lake Tahoe. The City is currently recruiting for lifeguards and swim instructors to work at the community pool in the recreation and swim complex. Work part time with flexible schedules in a fun environment! This is a great opportunity, in a beautiful setting, teaching swimming and ensuring a safe experience for visitors and residents. No experience necessary, however prior to starting employment applicants must obtain American Red Cross Certification for Lifeguarding and/or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification. Certification training may be available to qualified candidates.



Head Pool Lifeguard / $20.1315 - 24.4699 per hour
Recreation Instructor / $20.2682 - 25.8679 per hour 


New hires traditionally begin at step one of the salary range, but there is the possibility of starting at a higher step with outstanding experience in the job class.

All Recreation positions require a disposition that allows effective and positive interaction with the public as required by the position.

 

Pool Lifeguard

All Lifeguards are required to have American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. All Lifeguards are required to obtain Title 22-First Aid for Public Safety Personnel within the first year of employment. All Lifeguards must pass basic swim test and in-water rescue drills to be considered for employment.

 

Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring activities at the pool and conducting rescues to help weak or injured swimmers get to safety. Their duties include speaking with swimmers to enforce water safety rules and regulations, keeping track of each swimmer in the water and administering first aid to injured swimmers. Lifeguards are also required to handle the daily functions of an aquatic’s facility, notify supervisors of disturbances and emergencies, perform general pool and daily facility maintenance as assigned, participate in regular in-service trainings, open and close swimming facilities, perform duties with minimal instruction or assistance, function independently when performing regularly assigned tasks, and are expected to effectively problem solve situations within the parameters of designated job duties.  
 
Head Pool Lifeguard

Head Lifeguards are required to have: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Title 22-First Aid for Public Safety Personnel, and a minimum of two years lifeguarding experience demonstrating increased responsibilities. All Head Lifeguards must pass basic swim test and in-water rescue drills to be considered for employment. 

 

The primary responsibilities of Head Pool Lifeguards are to monitor activities at the pool and conducting rescues to help weak or injured swimmers get to safety. Head Pool Lifeguards must meet all qualifications listed under Pool Lifeguard with at least two years lifeguarding experience demonstrating increased responsibilities. The Head Lifeguard must also: provide lead supervision for Pool Lifeguards; oversee and monitor the daily activities of aquatics staff and programs; prepare and maintain routine reports; prepare staff schedules; coordinate swim lesson and swim programs; inventory equipment and supplies; act as a liaison between the public, staff, and office personnel; suggest program improvements; plan and facilitate staff meetings and in-service training; notify supervisors of disturbances, emergencies and staff performance problems; assist in the planning, organization, set up and tear down of special events and facility rentals; assist manager as requested.


The Head Lifeguard is the advanced journey-level classification in the Lifeguard series and distinguished by the performance of oversight duties at the facility with minimal instruction or assistance. Head Lifeguards are expected to function independently when performing regularly assigned tasks and are expected to effectively problem solve situations within the parameters of designated job duties.  Incumbents must have experience as a lifeguard and also perform both lifeguarding and swim instruction duties.
 
 Recreation Instructor (Aquatics)

The primary responsibility of a Recreation Instructor is to conduct swim instruction for all ages and abilities. Instructors must demonstrate an understanding of teaching and learning styles and be able to teach the fundamental Learn-to-swim courses including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-3, and private swimming lessons. Recreation Instructors must possess knowledge of basic swim strokes (crawl, breast, back, side and elementary back) as well as general water safety practices. Applicants must hold a current American Red Cross Certification for Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or be willing to obtain certification or equivalent training within six months of employment. 

Environment: Works in an inside/outside aquatics facility environment, in seasonal climate and weather conditions; works with slippery surface conditions, where water and swimming pool chemicals are frequently encountered; and subject to emergency situations.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field setting; to sitting, walking, standing, and swimming for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching; reaches with hands and arms; lifts, pushes, and pulls up to 200 pounds when responding to emergency lifesaving situations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool equipment; mental capability to observe people and situations, and respond calmly in emergency situations.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction, speaking sufficient to exchange information in person.
