Assistant to the Assessor

The City of South Portland is currently seeking a full time (37.5 hour per week) Assistant to the Assessor to join our team of professionals in the Finance Department. The office currently follows a 4-day workweek (Monday-Thursday).

This position reports to the Assessor and has no direct reports.

Position Summary: This position is responsible for maintaining a strict calendar for completing various administrative tasks within the Assessing Department including organizing and maintaining various physical and digital office records; processing real property transfers, tax exemption applications, and other documents; and performing selected technical and administrative assessing functions. In all aspects of this job, the incumbent establishes, provides, and solidifies outstanding customer service to the public. As an agency of city government, the Assessing Department has a direct responsibility to the City administration and to South Portland’s citizens.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by advanced training in Assessing, Bookkeeping, Bank Telling, and/or Accounting required. Assessing-related experience, including reading deeds, understanding the nature of real estate, or prior municipal experience is preferred.

Experience: Three (3)-years of related experience. Any equivalent combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Must be proficient with computer applications, preferably municipal applications mentioned herein.

Must possess and maintain a Maine State Class C driver’s license throughout employment.

Starting salary range $24.58/hour to $28.02 ($47,931 to $54,639 annualized), depending on experience. The position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
