Payscale:
2024-2025
Starting Pay: $53,873.88
Year 1 Pay: $57,707.97
Year 2 Pay: $62,024.42
Year 3 Pay: $65,858.42
Year 4 Pay: $69,692.53
Year 5 Pay: $74,747.43
One Year Lateral Pay is Offered for Prior Experience.
Current contract is 4 years in length ending in 2025-2026 with top out pay of $76,242.38 after 2 % raise scheduled for July 1st, 2025.
Requirements:
Be a U.S. citizen
Must possess an Associate’s Degree or equivalent (60 credit hours) or 1 year of
certified Police Service
Be at least 21 years of age at time of application
Must have a good driving record and a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Must pass a complete background investigation.
Must successfully pass all written and oral exams administered at the direction of
the Police and Fire Civil Service Commission.
Must have no prior felony or other disqualifying convictions and/or arrests.
Must pass all psychological, physical, and drug screen exams administered at the
direction of the City.
Must have no other disqualifying factors that would prohibit or otherwise
preclude the applicant from fully performing the duties of a Southgate Police
Officer.
Must comply with Southgate Police Department policy which requires all
members to present a neat and professional appearance at all times.
The uniform includes a short sleeve shirt open at the front of the neck. In addition
to visibility, some tattoos or brands may have symbolic meanings that are
inconsistent with the values of the Southgate Police Department.
You must be MCOLES certified, certifiable, or able to prove you are currently
attending or are scheduled to attend, an MCOLES certified police academy at
the time of application. NOTE: All applications submitted without proof of the
above will be rejected.

Job description
Police Officers shall be responsible for enforcing all criminal laws and ordinances with the City of Southgate. Police Officers shall be granted the commensurate authority and discretion necessary for the performance of their duties. In addition to the enforcement of all criminal laws and ordinances, the Police Officer’s duties shall include but are not limited to; crime prevention, maintain public peace, enforce traffic laws, investigate traffic crashes, crimes, and unusual or suspicious situations and other duties that may be delegated to them as necessary to maintain adherence to the overall police mission.
Police Officers shall keep abreast of crime patterns, local conditions and activities within and around the city. Police Officers shall maintain a working knowledge of city streets, businesses, schools, neighborhoods and other establishments within the city. A police officer’s primary concern is public safety. As such, a police officer shall also be vigilant for obstructions or other hazardous conditions within their patrol area, and take appropriate action to alleviate observed problems.
