The City of St. Petersburg Engineering & Capital Improvements Department is one of 171 American Public Works Association (APWA) certified agencies in the nation, and we continue to grow, delivering award winning projects such as the internationally recognized new St. Pete Pier, as well as awards for infrastructure upgrades and sustainability. The Engineering & Capital Improvements Department will be embarking on major infrastructure projects and extensive system capacity upgrades, implementing both the integrated water and wastewater master plan which includes water, wastewater, reclaimed water, and stormwater master plans. Also included in this infrastructure upgrades are roads, bridges, and seawalls, as well as vertical assets such as the new Shore Acres Recreational Center, all focused on resiliency and sustainability.
With such a major replacement and upgrade program, the City of St. Petersburg Engineering & Capital Improvements Department is looking to expand its team to include additional Engineers, Project Managers, Architects, and other essential staff to be part of delivering and advancing its community into a new era.
This is technical field work involving the inspection of City construction projects to ensure compliance with construction design and specifications as stipulated in the applicable contract. Work involves important contacts with contractors, officials of the County, State and Federal agencies, other City departments and the public to ensure that construction projects within the City conform to established standards.
Salary: $25.15 - $35.08 Hourly

To Qualify
Minimum Qualifications. Applicants Must:
- Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
- Have one-year journeyman or contractor experience on engineering or public works construction projects such as roadways, bridges, seawalls, parking garages and infrastructures or course work in the mentioned fields.
- Have the ability to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Have basic computer skills.
- Be able to swim, float and tread water, for safety reasons related to the area of assignment.
- Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:
- Possess a valid Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, or trade certification with major course work in construction.
- Have knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations as related to construction contracts.
- Are able to read and interpret plans, specifications, an details.
- Are able to review pay applications, change order requests, and requests for information.
- Are able to handle difficult situations and customer interactions with tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Are able to prepare detailed field reports and maintain daily records.
