What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pavement Apprentice or Technician position at City of St. Petersburg?
At the entry level, the Apprentice performs semi-skilled manual field work in the Stormwater, Pavement, and Traffic Operations Department, operating various types of construction equipment and using specialty tools to complete concrete and asphalt construction, installation, maintenance, and repair projects, including streets, sidewalks, curbs, and other pavement related assignments. Work of this class is characterized by participation and successful completion of an Apprenticeship Training Program designed to improve the employee’s knowledge of pavement maintenance and construction procedures; the development of skills for using the related hand and power tools and other specialized equipment; and gaining knowledge of departmental functions, policies, and procedures. The program consists of training segments that progressively become more difficult and requires less supervision. Upon satisfactory completion of all segments of the Apprentice Training Program and demonstration of adequate skill and proficiency, the employee becomes eligible for promotion to Pavement Technician. Applicants who have already completed an equivalent program of classroom study and work experience, and have demonstrated journeyman skills and abilities, may be considered for hire at the more skilled Technician level.
Salary: $19.19 - $31.24 Hourly*

- The selection into a Pavement Apprentice or Technician, will depend upon qualifications and experience. Initial employment is customarily at entry level. The entry level for a Technician is $21.84 Hourly.
To Qualify
Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:
- Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Possess and continue to maintain a valid Driver License.
- Obtain a State of Florida Class “B” temporary permit within 6 months of appointment to the position.
- Obtain a State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver License with “N” endorsement within 12 months of appointment to the position.
- Be able to participate in and successfully complete the required 4,000-hour Apprenticeship Training Program (on-the-job and classroom training) within 36 months of appointment to the position.
- Have some experience in the use of basic hand tools and hand held power tools.
- Have some computer knowledge.
- Be able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.
Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:
- Have a valid State of Florida Class “A” CDL and if hired may be eligible for additional incentive pay per City agreements.
- Have considerable knowledge of or experience with materials, equipment, tools, methods, and techniques used in concrete and asphalt related maintenance, repair, and construction projects and of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved.
- Have some knowledge of applicable construction and maintenance standards and specifications required by federal, state, and local government regulations.
- Are skilled in the operation of specialized equipment of the trade.
- Are able to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Are able to maintain accurate records for assigned projects.
