Work Schedule : Monday-Thursday, 7 : 30 a.m. - 12 : 00 p.m.

This part-time position works with the Community Services Department in the area of Senior Services to assist with kitchen operations and facilitation of Meals on Wheels program activities. The successful candidate must be available to work the above schedule and may be scheduled for special events or other shifts on evenings, weekends and / or holidays with advanced notice.

Summary Description : Under supervision, the Recreation Leader will promote, organize and provide personal leadership to Senior Center kitchen operations and other activities at an indoor and / or outdoor recreational facility.

Essential Functions

  • Organize, plan and implement a diversified program including sports, crafts, active and passive games on a park or playground setting.
  • Requisition, issue, receive and oversee the use of equipment and materials.
  • Ensure safety precautions are observed during free play.
  • Care for and maintain equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of special events and services.
  • Assist with the implementation of the sports program.
  • Maintain effective communication and harmonious relationships with the public, participants and associates.

Additional Essential Functions Specific to This Position

  • Assist with the operations of the Stanton Senior Center kitchen to prepare food for Senior Center participants.
  • Heat and prepare foods, food products, and other items according to recipes and established guidelines.
  • Pack and prepare meals for delivery to homebound clients according to dietary restrictions and preferences.
  • Portion and serve meals to Senior Center patrons.
  • Maintain routine records and accept deliveries as related to assigned activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to learn practices, methods and equipment related to proper food handling, preparation, serving / portioning and sanitation.
  • Safe operation of kitchen tools such as refrigerators, freezers, ovens and kitchen utensils for purpose of preparing and reheating foods.
  • Attention to detail, especially in verifying quantities, maintaining data, following directions and adhering to policies set forth by the City and its partner agencies.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • EXPERIENCE / TRAINING / EDUCATION :

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

  • One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in providing recreation and leisure time services.
  • Experience with food service, especially food-handling procedures, or experience working with public agencies is desired.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE : Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.

    PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS :

  • Potential Hazards : Heat from ovens or hot foods or surfaces; use of knives or other sharp objects; exposure to cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment requiring prolonged sitting, standing, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily activities. May require constant walking, standing (including on concrete or uneven ground), climbing and exercising full range of motion of the arms, hands, wrists and fingers.
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, dragging and lifting equipment and / or office items weighing 25 lbs.
  • Ability to hear and accurately communicate detailed or important instructions verbally.
  • Average visual acuity to prepare and read documents and monitor food quality.
  • Average visual acuity to prepare and read documents.
  • Ability to communicate with both the public and co-workers in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
  • Ability to endure exposure to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.

    SALARY RANGE : Composed of six (6) steps - Entry step through E step (Except management positions). Each step represents an increase of approximately five (5) percent.

    RETIREMENT : Provided through deferred compensation 457 plan administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS). Employee pays member contribution of 7.5%.

    SICK LEAVE : 4 hours per month.

    VACATION : 4 hours per month after 1 year of employment.

    HOLIDAY PAY : 5 hours for each observed holiday after 1 year of employment.

    DISCRETIONARY BENEFIT : $23.08 per pay period after 1 year of employment
