The Sterling Heights Nature Center, located along the scenic Clinton River, is a welcoming space for environmental education and exploration. Operated by the Parks and Recreation Department, the center features live animal exhibits, interactive displays, and access to nature trails and native plant areas. Programs include guided hikes, school field trips, archery lessons, nature crafts, and family-friendly events. Garden / Conservatory Description
The Community Garden and Butterfly Conservatory at James C. Nelson Park are part of the City’s initiative to Think Sterling Green, promoting healthy living, sustainability, and community connection. This vibrant space features over 100 raised garden beds, a peaceful butterfly conservatory, native planting areas, a microforest, bee apiary, and even a fun pizza garden. Designed for all ages and abilities, the garden encourages access to fresh food, hands-on learning, and time in nature. With accessible pathways, shaded seating, and educational signage, it’s a welcoming place to grow, explore, and connect.

From guided hikes to garden exploration, you’ll inspire curiosity and connect visitors of all ages to the natural world around them.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist with planning, preparing, and leading engaging nature-based programs for youth, families, and adults.
- Facilitate guided hikes, nature crafts, educational demonstrations, and interactive public activities.
- Care for animal and plant exhibits, including feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and assisting with the maintenance of native plantings and seasonal gardens.
- Welcome and engage visitors by answering questions and encouraging exploration of indoor exhibits and outdoor trails.
- Support school field trips, scout programs, homeschool groups, and other educational bookings.
- Assist with setup, operation, and cleanup of special events and seasonal programs.
- Contribute to the development of interpretive displays, educational signage, and interactive activity stations.
- Represent the Nature Center at off-site outreach events in schools, parks, and partner locations.
- Support the delivery of introductory archery programs, following all safety guidelines.
- Currently pursuing or holding a degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, education, natural resources, or a related field.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and collaboratively.
- Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must successfully pass a background check.
- Completion of all required City-provided training, including CPR, first aid, and concussion protocol.
