What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parks Maintenance Worker position at CITY OF STURGIS?
Will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of parks and cemetery grounds throughout the summer season. The ideal candidate will help ensure that parks are clean, well-kept, and aesthetically pleasing, and cemeteries remain respectful, serene, and well-maintained.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lawn and Grounds Maintenance:
- Mow, trim, and edge lawns in parks and cemetery areas.
- Water plants, lawns, and trees as needed.
- Remove weeds and trim overgrown grass, shrubs, and trees.
- Assist in planting flowers, shrubs, and seasonal plants.
- Tree and Plant Care:
- Prune and trim trees and shrubs to ensure healthy growth and maintain safety standards.
- Ensure proper care for newly planted trees and flowers.
- Playground and Equipment Maintenance:
- Inspect, clean, and maintain playground equipment for safety.
- Perform minor repairs and touch-up painting on playground structures and park amenities.
- Trash and Litter Control:
- Empty trash bins and ensure public areas are kept clean of litter.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness in parks and cemetery areas by picking up trash and debris.
- Pathway and Infrastructure Care:
- Sweep and clean park paths and cemetery walkways.
- Repair minor cracks, potholes, and other damage to park roads and walkways.
- Special Projects:
- Assist in setting up seasonal events, including preparing areas for festivals or community gatherings.
- Help with new landscaping projects, such as building garden beds or creating new green spaces.
- General Assistance:
- Provide support to full-time groundskeepers with ongoing projects.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (or currently enrolled in a high school program)
- Experience:
- Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or outdoor maintenance is preferred but not required.
- Experience working in a park or cemetery setting is a plus.
- Skills:
- Ability to operate basic landscaping equipment (mowers, trimmers, etc.).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a clean, organized work environment.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time.
- Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Hours of work:
Generally, workdays are between the hours of 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM, however, may include some evenings and weekends. Half-hour lunch (during an 8-hour day) with a 15-minute break in the morning and in the afternoon.
