This position consists of program coordination, project work, and specialized field work relating to the management of City of Sun Prairie's stormwater utility lands. The work involves direct responsibility for specialized programs and activities pertaining to vegetation maintenance around ponds, wetlands and within greenways, which are lands dedicated to the passage of water. The Stormwater Utility Coordinator manages approximately 175 facilities.
This position will perform technical and quasi-professional functions, such as conducting field inspections and condition assessments, preparing work plans, and coordinating noxious weed and invasive species removal and control activities. Under the limited supervision of the Public Works Operations Director and Engineering Director, positions such as this function independently in area(s) of responsibility. The work may involve leading Stormwater maintenance staff in special projects.

- Perform inspections and condition assessments to rate greenways, wetlands, and ponds. This work is done to assist in the identification and prioritization of restoration projects necessary to maintain design functionality, improve water quality and provide habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.
- Identify and prioritize required maintenance activities on greenways and ponds in conjunction with other stormwater utility staff. Work to be performed could include work by stormwater maintenance crews, or via the creation of a public works construction project.
- Manage ecological consultant contracts tasked with planting native vegetation and improving water quality in stormwater facilities.
- Serve as point of contact for resident inquiries into stormwater utility facilities.
- Perform data collection activities to enhance existing GIS records. Maintain related records, files and reference materials.
- Assist in the preparation of narrative and statistical reports, drawings and other materials as necessary using ArcGIS.
- Perform scheduled inspections of other greenway and pond areas for noxious weed/invasive species infestation and for general maintenance requirements.
- Coordinate changes to maintenance activities to remedy weed infestation.
- Review infested areas to assess progress and determine next required action.
- Assist with snow removal operations during winter months.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Associate’s degree in biological systems engineering, landscape architecture, landscape management, conservation resources, natural resources, ecology, horticulture, agronomy, or a close related field (bachelor's degree preferred).
- A minimum of four (4) years of professional and/or technical experience in vegetative management with invasive species/pest controls.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A) is required within 6 months of hire. The City of Sun Prairie offers in-house CDL training.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain a Wisconsin State Pesticide Certification for Right-of-Way and Natural Areas pesticide application during the six (6) month probation/trial period, and to maintain certification. Failure to obtain the certification within the required time period, may result in forfeiture of the position, absent extenuating circumstances.
- Proper maintenance on greenways and ponds.
- GIS technology and related software for collection activities/record keeping.
- Make serious decisions in absence of specific policies and/or little guidance from supervisors.
- Work independently and manage own daily workload.
- Frequently work with exposure to physically demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements.
- Technical experience in vegetative management with invasive species/pest control.
- Listening, critical thinking, problem analysis and problem solving; written/verbal communication skills; ability to tailor the message, context, and mode of communication to the audience; ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment and self-identify organizational, department, and individual priorities.
- Work is performed 50% in-office and 50% in-field.
- Employees must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
- Ability to operate a CAD/GIS workstation with hand and eye coordination using a mouse and keyboard for inputting data.
- Employees are expected to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
- Employees must be able to frequently walk over uneven surfaces and active construction sites including uneven, steep, muddy, or snow-covered terrain to physically access all areas of the Sun Prairie Stormwater Utility's greenways and ponds. Must be able bend, squat, and stand for long periods of time; and must be able to tolerate loud noises, dust, and pollen.
- Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry objects (such as bags of seed or landscaping materials) weighing up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Regular exposure to particularly demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements such as dealing with inclement weather, operating heavy equipment, etc.
- When assigned to emergency call duty, must respond, and if necessary, report to duty in all weather conditions and at all hours of the day or night.
