Position Summary:
This is skilled and semi-skilled trades work in the construction, renovation, rehabilitation, and restoration of public works projects. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled work or one highly specialized trade in such areas as painting, masonry, tile setting, roofing, and paper hanging and a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in other construction trades.  Employees in this class may supervise and instruct semi-skilled and unskilled workers and may participate in a wide variety of construction work at all skill levels.  An employee in this class performs tasks with general instructions, exercising limited judgment to accomplish tasks within established procedures.

Position Scope:
Work is reviewed by a supervisor through direct observation while work is in progress and upon completion. The position of Senior is differentiated from the position of Construction Worker by the skill level required and limited supervisory duties.

  • May prepare surfaces to be painted, mix paints and related materials; apply paints, stains, varnishes and related decorative or protective materials, using brushes, rollers, spray equipment or other tools; clean and care for painting tools and equipment. May prepare surfaces for wall coverings, apply wallpaper and other wall covering materials. 
  • May mix mortar, place concrete block, brick, stone and stone-like materials, maintaining dimensions and plumb-lines according to instructions or construction drawings.  May prepare walls, tack, lath, mix plaster, apply plaster to walls, and finish the surface according to specifications.  May apply cement, place tiles; mix, apply and finish grout, and apply a variety of wall and floor tiles to a variety of surfaces. 
  • May perform semi-skilled work in a variety of construction trades assisting skilled workers in other trades or working independently at semi-skilled tasks such as constructing rough carpentry frames and forms, installing ceilings and paneling, installing and repairing roofing systems, hanging drywall, painting, installing rough shelving, installing cabinets, cutting and placing reinforcing steel bars and wire mesh for concrete. 
  • May perform unskilled tasks, such as carrying and caring for tools, equipment and materials, and may perform manual labor tasks, such as cleaning up work sites, removing debris, digging and removing dirt, laying sod and other construction-related tasks. 
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment and techniques of one or more of the secondary construction trades of masonry, plastering, painting, tile setting, roofing or paper hanging. 
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques of several other construction trades. 
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the construction trades and of the proper use of safety devices and practices. 
  • Skill in the use, operation, and care of hand and power tools employed in the construction trades. 
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to complete work assignments correctly. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees. 
     

Required Education & Experience:

  • High school graduate or general education degree (GED)
  • Five (5) years experience in one of the secondary construction trades of masonry, plastering, painting, tile setting, roofing, paper hanging, or general construction work. Experience must have been of such to have provided semi-skilled abilities in several other construction trades.  
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid Florida’s License, CDL preferred. 
  • Construction related licenses/certifications preferred.

  • On a continuous basis, sit at desk and/or stand for long periods of time. Frequently required to operate a motor vehicle. Frequently required to see, hear and talk with employees and the public. Frequently required to read and/or present documents, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means. Frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, taste, or smell. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment and field equipment and tools; on occasion lift or carry weight of up to 50 pounds. Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid weather conditions, mechanical moving parts, vibration, high places, fumes and/or airborne particles, chemicals, loud noise, and risk of electric shock. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • There is a one-year probationary period.

  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.


Salary : $49,694 - $81,498
