NATURE OF WORK
This is varied recreational and related work in assisting in the conducting of games, sports and other recreational activities at City parks, recreation centers, and related facilities.
Employees in this class assist in the leadership of a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational activities for select age groups at an assigned recreation facility. Duties also include maintenance or custodial work, classroom and/or facility set up, collection of fees, and retail sales. Employees work with some independence conducting activities with assigned groups within the general program as outlined as superiors. Work is performed under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor who assigns and reviews work in progress for achievement of desired objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Interacts with, and handles issues related to, patrons, vendors, and/or staff to gather feedback and enhance programs and operations, escalating as necessary.
- Leads a select age group in general organized recreational activities such as team games, sports, and arts and crafts.
- Assists in the issue and collection of equipment such as bats, balls or rackets; officiates at athletic events; ensures that practices of fair play are adhered to and keeps score.
- Instructs and explains simple games and sports to participants; instructs some classes in simple arts and crafts such as finger painting or bead work.
- Sets up simple displays of revenue/concession merchandise; cleans and restocks shelves; assists with monthly inventories.
- Performs routine maintenance and custodial work such as fixing signs, cleaning bathrooms, fitness room, racquet ball courts and gymnasiums, removing litter, and cleaning concession areas as assigned.
- Maintains order in the facility by observing the play habits of participants, anticipating and stopping unacceptable conduct; ensures the safety practices are adhered to; renders minor first aid for cuts and bruises.
- Assists in physical set up for a variety of programs and special events.
- Assists in stocking warehouses with inventory, performs errands relating to various programs for all divisions of the department.
- Acts as night security guard by turning lights on and off, making rounds to preserve security and anticipating and stopping unacceptable conduct as necessary. Secures the building at closing time.
- Collects fees for various recreation programs or classes; makes over-the-counter sales of various items; collects money and makes change.
- Works evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate as needed.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency diploma
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports or related field may substitute for experience requirement.
EXPERIENCE
- Basic full-time paid experience in leadership of recreation programs, group activities or organized athletic programs
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree may substitute for experience requirement
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical:
- Light to moderate physical effort required, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to twenty (20) pounds. The position requires the ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time. Incumbent must have the ability to effectively operate City vehicles and/or golf carts.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in various environments including standard office, recreational facilities, and outdoors. Work hours may vary as needed and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, severe temperatures and exposure to water. The position may require travel to various locations in the City of Sunrise area.
Sensory:
- The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Requires ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload and to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate while completing tasks within established time frames. It also requires interaction with employees and officials from all City departments/divisions, vendors and the general public.
- Some knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of public recreation and park maintenance, including some understanding of activities which comprise a community recreation program.
- Some knowledge of rules and fundamentals of team and individual sports.
- Some knowledge of the principles and techniques of first aid, CPR, and AED.
- Some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the area of assignment and of the facilities and equipment used in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
- Some knowledge of routine maintenance procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to lead and instruct games and other recreation activities.
- Ability to work cooperatively with the public.
- Ability to handle cash and give appropriate change.
- Ability to work on a computer using Office and department software, including learning new software.
