DEFINITION:

A Police officer performs a wide variety of duties connected with general police work including investigation, general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Superior and providing other various types of assistance to include advancing the mission of the Superior Police Department. The entry level Police Officer must successfully complete a 18 week recruit academy (if not Wisconsin certified) and 14 weeks of on-the-job-field training. The City will pay you while you attend the recruit academy AND pay for the recruit academy!

A Lateral Transfer Police Officer must have one year of full-time law enforcement experience and be eligible to become a Certified Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire. Upon hire, a Lateral Transfer Police Officer will be credited with their years of full-time law enforcement for the purposes of wage placement, vacation accrual, and minimum experience for Detective application. The Lateral Transfer Police Officer must successfully complete 14 weeks of on-the-job field training, in addition to passing a 12 month probationary period.

DEFINITION:

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Police Officer series includes the Master Police Officer. The Master Police Officer level is attained with 10 years of service as a Police Officer for the City of Superior Police Department. With each year of service the Officer is expected to take on more responsibility and work more independently. Police Officers must successfully complete a recruit academy if not Wisconsin certified, and a 14 week on-the-job field training program in addition to passing a probationary period. The probationary period will begin with 1st day after completion of recruit school, or 1st day of employment if already Wisconsin certified and not attending school, and continue for a twelve (12) month period.

Employment Standards:

Knowledges: Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement; laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement; first aid; and geography of the City of Superior and surrounding area. Some knowledge of court proceedings and proper investigative practices.

Abilities: Ability to successfully complete a recruit academy (if not already Wisconsin certified), and successfully complete a 14 week on-the job field training program; prepare clear and concise reports; operate a computer; speak clearly and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public; provide credible testimony in a court of law; use a firearm and other equipment; drive a police vehicle; work under adverse weather conditions; work varied shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; and use good judgment, integrity and tact.

REQUIREMENTS:

Must be a U.S. citizen. Must have no serious criminal convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED. Candidates will be required to complete 60 college credits from an accredited college in any field within the first five years of hire with the police department. Must have accurate color vision. Must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 in each eye corrected to 20/20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20/40 vision in the other eye. A satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year with vision corrected to 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye, is also accepted.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must become certified as a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer within one year of hire date and maintain such certification.Will be required to take an oath of office.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.Must reside anywhere within a forty-five minute response time to the corporate limits of the City of Superior within 6 months of completion of probationary period.Must pass a detailed background investigation prior to hire.Must pass a psychological exam for the position prior to hire.Must pass medical exam for specified occupational grouping and drug screen prior to hire.Supplemental Information:

  • "CERTIFIED" college transcripts will subsequently be required from all candidates who make it to the eligible hire list.
  • A copy of your DD-214 if you are a veteran.
  • A copy of your Wisconsin Department of Justice Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification (if you are currently Wisconsin certified).

*The WLESB manual defines 'Accredited Credits' as: "Associate degree level credits or higher that have been awarded by a member of the WI Technical College System or by its equivalent in another state or by a private or state college or university with current membership in good standing in a predominant, national or regional accrediting organization for private or state colleges or universities recognized by the US Department of Education." The manual further states, "Colleges and universities that are accredited by an accrediting agency or association that is acknowledged by the United States Secretary of Education are acceptable to the Board as a source of college credit. Identification of colleges and universities accredited by accrediting agencies approved by the US Department of Education is available at: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation."

"The National Police Officer Selection Test" (POST).- by Stanard & Associates, Inc.

Monday, March 31, 2025 at 3 p.m. You will be able to sign up for either date. The exam will take approximately 2 hours.
The exam will be given in Superior only. Exam notices will be emailed to qualified applicants at the email address listed on their application.

Will be held on A DATE, TIME AND LOCATION, YET TO BE DETERMINED. Check back periodically for updated information.

We will be giving the Law Enforcement Academy Physical Readiness Test (PRT). A link to the PRT details is found here: https://wilenet.widoj.gov/training-standards/agency-administered-entry-prts This is the same exam that you would be required to pass at the recruit academy. .

Eligible applicants must score among the top 50 passing candidates on the written test to continue in the process. Successful candidates must then pass an interview and a physical readiness test to be placed on the eligible list. Veteran's Preference points will be assigned prior to calculating the final score for ranking on the eligible list. Following these tests, candidates on the certified hire list must complete and pass a background investigation to be considered for appointment. Finally, candidates must pass a psychological examination, post job offer medical examination and drug screen to receive a probationary appointment.

The eligible list established through this process will be used for filling vacancies for a two year period from the date the list is established. The list can be extended up to 3 years by the Superior Police and Fire Commission.
