The City of Syracuse (Department of Police) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Community Engagement.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Syracuse Police Department Office of Community Engagement and its Syracuse Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) have been serving the youth of our community since December 2020, providing sports, activities, result-oriented programming, and professional staff to guide them. Syracuse PAL’s number one priority is to provide opportunities for law enforcement to engage with young people to build positive and intentional relationships.
The Assistant Director of Community Engagement is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Syracuse PAL programs and activities under the guidance of the Director of Community Engagement, to help ensure program objectives and outcomes are met, and staff are supervised. The Assistant Director of Community Engagement will also engage in well-defined teaching /training opportunities with children and/or young adults, in collaboration with our community partners, local schools, local officials, teachers and parents. The Assistant Director of Community Engagement will identify and develop partnerships, age-appropriate curriculum, and lessons for Syracuse PAL sports leagues, and activities.
The Assistant Director of Community Engagement will be reporting to the Director of Community Engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Management and supervision of all SPAL sports leagues, special events, and activities.
- In conjunction with the Director of Community Engagement, identify, plan, organize, and manage special events.
- Collect, review, and submit programming, membership, and staff reports to Director.
- Maintain collaborative relationships, with parents, children, educational institutions, and County partners.
- Develop relationships with parents through parent involvement activities and regular communication.
- Assist the Director of Community Engagement with identifying, submitting, administering, and reporting required for all funding.
- Participate in hiring educational, support, and program staff with the Director of Community Engagement.
- Assist the Director to ensure quality programming through job orientation, regular staff supervision, program evaluation, staff training, program development, etc.
- Assist the Director in regular evaluation of staff performance.
- Maintain and ensure that all administrative details of the program are implemented: program registration, student application/enrollment forms, attendance, employee documentation, and update and maintain the budget, supply ordering, etc.
- Ensure that incident reports (accidents, injuries, altercations, etc.) are submitted no later than 24 hours after the occurrence.
- Review reports and provide copies to Director of Community Engagement for record-keeping purposes.
- In absence of the Director of Community Engagement, represent Syracuse PAL & the office of Community Engagement.
- Develop and maintain a relationship with school principals, and designated school staff. Ensure the school’s goals and needs are reflected in Syracuse PAL programming.
- Create activity plans monthly.
- Bi-weekly meetings with the Director of Community Engagement.
- Monitor and respond promptly to messages (emails, voice mail, social media, TraX Solutions.)
- Provide prompt notification to the Director of Community Engagement of issues of concern.
- Be present, visible, and engaged with members, staff/volunteers, Syracuse Police Department.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree preferred from an accredited college or university in Education, Administration, Recreation, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, or related field.
- A minimum of three years of professional paid work experience in a non-profit youth or social service agency in an administrative or managerial capacity.
- Passion for the mission and values of Syracuse PAL, grounded in the belief that young people’s individual strengths and capabilities can guide them to mature, productive adulthood with our encouragement and commitment.
- Understanding of conflict resolution, mediation, and mentoring concepts.
- Good communication skills, both oral, and written. Ability to speak professionally to staff, members, parents, groups, and community residents.
- Familiarity with office protocol’s involving dress, demeanor, record keeping, confidentiality, staff meetings, visitors, and employee use of supplies and equipment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.
- Possession of a valid NYS driver’s license.
- If not CPR and First Aid Certified, will be required to obtain certification within the first 6 months of employment.
- Must live in the City of Syracuse; if not, you are required to relocate within the first 6 months of employment.
