The City of Syracuse Office of the Mayor is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Interstate 81 City Project Director.
Job Duties
- Serve as City of Syracuse primary contact with New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Interstate 81 Viaduct project teams and subcontractors through project planning and construction phases
- Coordinate with all relevant city departments, city agencies and Common Council regarding project planning and construction to ensure interests of city government and residents are addressed by NYSDOT
- Analyze Interstate 81 viaduct project plans, including but not limited to Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision, to understand, anticipate and prepare for impact on city government and residents
- Prepare official correspondence on behalf of City of Syracuse to relevant local, state and federal agencies and elected leaders regarding project planning and construction
- Represent City of Syracuse with community stakeholders (residents, neighborhood groups, businesses, non-profits, planning organizations, large institutions, etc.); attend community meetings
- Coordinate with Syracuse Build and other community workforce development and job training programs
- Management of professional consultants and contractors assisting City of Syracuse in urban planning and design
- Prepare regular project status reports to city department heads and administration
- Coordinate permitting/approvals with relevant city departments
- Represent City of Syracuse on NYSDOT land working group
- Respond to constituent concerns regarding project (with constituent engagement coordinator)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a resident of the City of Syracuse, or must be prepared to relocate to the City of Syracuse.
- Professional experience in urban planning, design, and construction management, architecture; landscape architecture; engineering; and/or government relations preferred.
- Three (3) plus years of demonstrated ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar certification desirable.
- Proven track record of effectively interacting with diverse multiple stakeholders at all levels.
- Effective, versatile and action-oriented.

- Strong communication skills, especially for written, digital and verbal correspondence
- Strong organization and project management skills
- Able to coordinate responses from various staff and departments

- Experience with construction, design, and review
