The City of Syracuse Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Services is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Recreation Leader to assist in organizing and conducting a phase of the City's recreation program. Under the direct supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or the administrator of a recreation program, an employee in this class conducts recreation activities by participating in a leadership role and, depending on the area of assignment, directly supervising the work of program staff such as Recreation Attendants and Aides, as well as volunteers. Duties include setting up equipment, scheduling participants in multi-activity programs and assigning subordinate personnel. The planning, design and development of recreation programs is not typically a function of this class. This position differs from the Recreation Activity Specialist in that an employee in that class is primarily responsible for the instruction of specific sport or activity.
Assignments of Recreation Leaders vary widely. In the City of Syracuse, some Recreation Leaders provide recreation services to the elderly while others function as broad, recreation generalists at various city recreation centers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Organizes and participates in activities such as team sports, arts and crafts, nature studies, field trips, hikes, camping, skiing and skating, dramatics, dancing, musical events, storytelling, socials and special events; may, depending on the area of assignment, directly supervise subordinate personnel in the conduct of activities.
Encourages individuals, business and private sector groups to participate in activities; may assist in the public relations and advertising of the program and/or event.
Assess participants' recreation needs and varies activities accordingly; may recommend to a supervisor changes to meet needs.
Maintains order at events by enforcing rules and safety regulations.
May keep records of daily time sheets, equipment, monies received, supplies, activity participants, etc.; may be required to make oral and written reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. One (1) recreation season or three (3) months of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the conduct of recreation activities such as low organized games, sports, arts and crafts, etc.; OR,
B. Successful completion of fifteen (15) credit hours in recreation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university; OR,
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
