What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Resource Modeling Engineering Intern position at City of Tacoma?
Tacoma Public Utilities Power Management division is currently recruiting for a Power Resource Modeling Engineering Intern! This opportunity is for engineering students to apply their engineering studies, receive hands-on experience, and work side-by-side with experienced professionals on challenging and interesting engineering projects.
This is a full time 40-hour work week that coincides with the typical summer break for college students. This is a hybrid position. Employees will be required to come into the office approximately three days a week. All City of Tacoma employees must live in Washington State within 2 hours of their onsite work location while under employment. The onsite work location for this position is 3628 South 35th Street, Tacoma, WA.
This internship provides support to Tacoma Power’s Integrated Resource Power Planning Modeling Team by assisting in the execution, maintenance, and enhancement of a Python-based modeling codebase used for medium- and long-term planning. Under the direct supervision of a licensed engineer, Principal Data Analyst, the intern will perform data science and modeling tasks, analyze results, and contribute to process improvements.
This position directly supports Tacoma Power’s mission to provide reliable and affordable energy and enhances our ability to proactively manage power supply risks and optimize our power resources. It is also an excellent opportunity for an engineering intern to learn firsthand how utilities model their power systems and plan for future contingencies.
Responsibilities Include:
- Participating in modeling team meetings and group planning sessions. Communicating with team members about progress and challenges.
- Performing model runs. Drafting the presentation of results for decision-makers.
- Updating and improving the model codebase through GitHub issues. Troubleshooting, developing, testing, and documenting code.
- Performing statistical modeling. For example, updating machine learning models to improve the accuracy of forecasts.
- Exploring hydro power dispatch algorithms such as rules-based, linear optimization and reinforcement learning to improve decision-making at Tacoma Power.
