Engineering Intern
City of The Dalles

DEFINITION: This entry-level engineering position within the Engineering Division is involved in and responsible for conducting surveys, design, drafting construction plans, and preparing bid documents and related materials for the operation, maintenance, and capital improvement of water distribution, wastewater collection, street, and storm water facilities and infrastructure projects under the direct supervision of the City Engineer. The Engineer Intern will also be responsible for assisting the City's Construction Inspector with inspecting public works capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with specifications and standards. Additionally, the position manages and updates computer mapping of all utilities under the direction of the City Engineer.
QUALIFICATIONS: Developmental Experience in the Use and/or Application of:
- Civil engineering principles and practices. Current codes and regulations which pertain to design and construction for water distribution, wastewater collection (storm and sanitary), and/or transportation systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Auto-CAD Civil 3D, GIS, water and sewer system modeling software.
- GPS and Total Station survey equipment and practices.
- Construction safety practices and regulations.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job. Minimum requirements are:
Experience: One (1) year prior experience in civil engineering field relating to the design of street, water and wastewater utilities systems is desired. Established skills using spread sheets, word processing, Auto-CAD, and GIS.
Training: Minimum of an Associate's Degree is required. However, Bachelor of Science Degree is preferred in civil engineering or related field from an ABET accredited curriculum or equivalent, plus appropriate continuing education.
CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSES: Engineer-in-Training certificate is desired but not required at time of hire. Valid Driver's License required at the time of hire.
PAY: $69,490.26 to $85,464.25 annually, plus generous benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision insurances and employer-paid retirement contributions equal to 13.5% of base wage after one year of employment.
