The City of Torrance is recruiting for Maintenance Workers to be part of the
Public Works or Park Services Team!
The Departments
The Public Works Department has vacancies in Street Operations (Street Maintenance), Streetscape, and Sanitation. The Department is made up of over 200 employees who provide service to our residents, businesses, and other City departments to improve and maintain the City's parks and recreational facilities, streets, sidewalks, landscaping, traffic, sewers, and water system.
The Park Services Division is responsible for the maintenance of all city parks, as well as the Civic Center Complex and Sea Aire Golf Course. The division maintains all trees, turf, barbecues, benches, game courts, and athletic fields, and is primarily responsible for the rehabilitation of all parks.
The Position
Maintenance Workers are entry-level positions assigned to work in various assignments throughout the City. There are currently vacancies in Park Services, Street Operations (Street Maintenance), Streetscape, and Sanitation. Descriptions of all assignments are listed below:
- Park Services: Assists in the maintenance, replacement and basic repair of City parks, trees and landscaping, irrigation systems and recreational facilities.
- Concrete: Assists with the construction and/or repair of City curbs, gutters, sidewalks and other concrete structures.
- Sanitation: Assists with refuse collection; large item pick up and illegal dump collection; builds and repairs refuse carts and bins; repair and maintain equipment; and serves as relief operator on refuse trucks or motor sweepers.
- Street Maintenance: Assists with construction work and safely operates a variety of tools and equipment to repair City streets.
- Streetscape: Assists in the maintenance, and replacement of trees and grounds, and the basic repair of irrigation systems located on City parkways and medians.
- Traffic and Lighting: Assists in the maintenance, replacement and/or repair of traffic signals; traffic signs and street markings.
- Transit: Cleans and services Transit bus stop shelters and adjacent grounds.
Maintenance Workers are expected to have physical strength and stamina, be able to follow directions, work well under both close supervision and independently, learn skills in various trades, be safety conscious, and work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
HOURS
Maintenance Workers must be available for emergency call out outside normal work hours.

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Applicants must be able to read and follow directions to safely use of a variety of tools, materials, and equipment. In addition, employees must be available to work a variety of shifts and hours, as required by job assignment.
Successful candidates will possess the following:
- A work history of stability, reliability, dependability, and punctuality;
- A good driving record within the past three years;
- A willingness to work in a physically active environment;
- A strong customer service orientation;
- A strong work ethic.
Applicants are required to possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license or higher. Many positions (Concrete, Sanitation, Street Maintenance, Streetscape) require a Class A or B license be obtained prior to the completion of the probationary period.

Applicants must have a good driving record within the past three years; including but not limited to no DUI's, Reckless Driving or Suspensions.
