Receives general supervision from the Garage Superintendent, and day-to-day activities from the Garage Supervisor. A Vehicle Equipment Technician is thoroughly trained and experienced in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of all City vehicles and equipment. This employee functions as an experienced mechanic/technician, at the journey level, performing a wide range of maintenance, diagnostic, and mechanical repair. This is a full-time union position; the starting pay is $27.63 per hour. Effective July 1, 2025, the pay rate will range from $29.01 - $32.42 per hour, based on step. Starting July 1, 2026, the rate will be $30.17 - $33.72 per hour, depending on step.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with additional applicable related course work or experience as necessary to maintain ability and skills.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in automotive and equipment repair.
  • ASE certification preferred.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and obtain and maintain a CDL Class A license with air brakes and "N" endorsement within one hundred twenty (120) work days from date of hire.
  • Employees must provide their own set of basic hand tools to perform Vehicle Equipment Technician work.
  • Must be able to operate hand, power, pneumatic air tools, and shop service equipment.
  • Must be able to safely operate a variety of shop equipment necessary to be learned and applied including, but not limited to, brake lathe, drill press, tire mounting and balancing equipment, vehicle hoists, band saw and welding equipment.
  • Must be able to safely operate a variety of vehicles and equipment necessary to be learned and applied including, but not limited to, backhoes, wheel loaders, tractors, plow-dump trucks, police vehicles, fire trucks, snow groomers, pumps and air compressors.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with the public, employees and City administrators.
