What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Maintenance Custodian position at City of Two Harbors?

Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, this position is responsible for various daily janitorial duties within City buildings and facilities; Employees in this position performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the custodian care of City of Two Harbors owned facilities.

Employees in this position are expected to perform assigned activities without detailed instruction as to specific procedures to be followed and receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully capable of attaining the skills and knowledge to perform the assigned duties and operating procedures and policies.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under general supervision of the Public Works Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs routine custodial work and cleaning activities such as sweeping exterior walkways; interior entryways and floors; hallways; sidewalks, stairwells, sweeps, vacuums, mops, dusts, empties trash. Infrequently shampoos, cleans, strips and waxes floors. Employee in this position polishes, and buffs floors, cleans carpets, and furniture, washes windows, walls, metal and woodwork etc.

Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies; cleans spills; cleans drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.

Ensures that the grounds outside of buildings is kept free of refuse and litter. Will sweep entryways and steps and apply deicer to walkways and steps as needed.

Empties, cleans and maintains trash receptacles and recycling bins in appropriate locations throughout facilities.

Dusts and cleans office furniture; cleans upholstery; counters; ceilings etc.

Cleans and disinfects kitchen areas, and bathroom areas; stocks and replenishes supplies and materials.

Moves and arranges furniture and office equipment, prepares meeting rooms for meeting set ups and takes down when completed; special events set ups; collects recyclable materials.

Relocates parcel deliveries from drop off locations to appropriate departmental locations within buildings and facilities.

Cleans light fixtures and replaces light bulbs when needed.

Operates small hand tools and other equipment necessary in related custodial work. Opens and closes locks and unlocks facilities as needed.

Keeps and maintains Safety Data Sheets. Attends training as required.

Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(A) High School Diploma or GED;

(B) Any combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work,

(C) Valid Class D Driver's License with an acceptable driving record PREFERRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(A) Meets the Minimum Qualifications of Public Works Specialist I

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of:

1. Intermediate knowledge of methods, safe work practices and techniques especially in the appropriate and safe handling and use of toxic chemicals; materials and equipment used in janitorial work.

2. OSHA trained in the handling of hazardous materials including, but not limited to, blood, vomit or other human bodily fluids and/or by products.

Ability to:

1. Ability to read and understand safety data sheets, written communications, cleaning product use instructions and policies and procedures.

2. Ability to write routine communications, emails and memo/notes.

3. Ability to work independently and to complete daily work activities as assigned.

4. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

5. Ability to exercise a moderate amount of independent judgment.

6. Ability to effectively present information in written and or one-on-one situations.

7. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. Must be capable to calculate and measure units necessary to safely mix cleaning products.

Skilled in:

1. Skill in the operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in custodial duties

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Pickup Truck or other motor vehicle, brooms, mops, vacuums, dusting equipment, floor buffers, step ladder, cleaning supplies, dusting equipment and smart phone. May use snow shovel for clearing front walks and entry steps.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works indoors while being occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

The employee is exposed to cleaning chemicals and dust on a regular basis. On a minor basis, the employee can be exposed to the risk of electrical shock.

The employee works in an office environment and exposed to office noise levels.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.62 - $25.53 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
