What are the responsibilities and job description for the Permit Technician position at City of Tyler?
Processes building permit and various zoning applications, checks for accuracy and completeness, routes to appropriate review staff, monitors application progress, prepares plans and permits for issuance. Issues over the counter permits within scope of authority and responsibility assigned.
Provide general zoning, building and related code information.
Provide guidance in filling out various applications and forms, making sure the applicant understands the permitting process and that they have the necessary information and attachments required to submit an accurate and complete application.
Enter money in the cash receipt system, balance, close out and run reports daily.
Responsible for the accurate and timely maintenance of records of the permit process; inputs, maintains, and compiles a variety of data on permitting activity such as the number of permits by type, valuation, permit fees, etc.
Provides customer service activities, which includes: greeting customers; answering phones; responding to requests for information or service; and performing other related activities.
Prepares files for electronic archiving and scans as necessary.
Coordinates with Plans Examiners to ensure timely and accurate review and issuance of building permits.
Enters a variety of data into the computerized permit tracking system and files documents and records as required; processes requests for addresses; performs a variety of general clerical duties, maintains supply of office forms, public handouts, office supplies and equipment.
Prepares and posts agendas for P&Z, ZBA and HPB.
Records and types minutes for P&Z, ZBA, and HPB.
Prepares and mails public hearing notices to affected property owners for P&Z, ZBA and City Council.
Prepares newspaper publications for notice of public hearing for P&Z, ZBA, HPB, and City Council.
Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors, architects, owners, and the general public.
Maintain supply of office forms and public handouts, order office supplies and monitor expenditures.
Must have the ability to take phone calls and answer questions pertaining to the building permit and planning process.
Must have knowledge of where to find answers to basic code related questions and the ability to apply and explain the answers.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.
Must have the knowledge of computerized record keeping system.
Must have the ability to use PC computers, with a proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and HTE permitting software.
Must have the ability to operate office machines.
Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision.
Must have the ability to prioritize a workload under extremely busy conditions and frequent interruptions.
Other duties as assigned.
The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
